What is a tap dancer?

A tap dancer is a performer who creates rhythmic sounds by striking the floor with specialized tap shoes. They may perform in theatrical productions, films, live shows, or competitions. Tap dancers often train extensively to master intricate footwork and timing. Many also teach classes or choreograph routines for performances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tap dancer?

To thrive as a Tap Dancer, you need strong rhythm, musicality, physical coordination, and prior dance training, often obtained through specialized classes or conservatory programs. Tap dancers may utilize tap shoes with metal plates, practice on sprung dance floors, and sometimes seek certifications in dance teaching or performance arts. Creativity, perseverance, and effective collaboration are essential soft skills in this role. These abilities enable tap dancers to deliver compelling performances, adapt to diverse choreographic styles, and succeed in audition-based, performance-driven environments.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a tap dancer?

A professional Tap Dancer's schedule can vary widely depending on performance commitments, rehearsal periods, and teaching responsibilities. Most dancers spend significant time in rehearsals perfecting routines, often including evenings and weekends leading up to shows or tours. Outside of performances, tap dancers may teach classes or workshops, participate in auditions, and collaborate with choreographers and other performers. Flexibility and time management are important, as the role can involve irregular hours and travel for shows or competitions.

How long does it take to become a professional tap dancer?

Becoming a professional tap dancer typically requires several years of dedicated practice, often 3 to 5 years, to develop technical skills, rhythm, and performance ability. Many dancers start with formal training through classes, workshops, or dance programs, and gaining experience through performances helps advance to a professional level.

Job description

Champaign Park District – Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours not to exceed 19 hours per week on average

About the Job:

If tap dance is your passion and teaching is your calling, this role hits the sweet spot. As a Tap Dance Instructor with the Champaign Park District’s Dance Arts School, you’ll bring movement, creativity, and structure together—guiding students of all ages and skill levels while helping shape a positive, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment. You won’t just teach steps; you’ll help build confidence, discipline, and joy through dance.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Teach high-quality tap dance classes to participants of varying ages and skill levels
  • Assist with planning and implementing tap dance curriculum, classes, rehearsals, and performances
  • Demonstrate and instruct proper tap dance techniques, movements, and physical skills
  • Schedule and lead rehearsals in preparation for performances
  • Maintain accurate attendance, records, and required documentation
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students, parents, and staff
  • Provide feedback and evaluations to the Dance Arts Supervisor
  • Maintain and care for tap dance equipment and supplies
  • Uphold all Park District safety policies and confidentiality standards
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings
  • Complete time sheets, incident reports, and other administrative tasks on time
  • Administer First Aid and/or CPR when needed, within certification scope
  • Lift and transport equipment (up to 50 lbs) as required

Qualification

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Minimum of 10 years of intensive, continuous dance training
  • Experience teaching or working with children, youth, and/or adults in a structured instructional setting
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development in dance or dance instruction
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends based on class and performance schedules
  • Ability to meet physical demands of dance instruction

Why Work With Us?

Let’s be honest—this is a great gig if you love dance and want to teach without the grind of a private studio schedule. You’ll gain instructional experience, performance coordination skills, and the chance to be part of a respected community arts program. Plus, you’ll work with supportive leadership, enthusiastic students, and a Park District that genuinely values arts education.

Benefits & Perks for Seasonal Employees
