How much do tanker owner operator jobs pay per week?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average weekly pay for tanker owner operator in Colorado is $5,232.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $5,863.46 and $5,863.46 per week, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tanker owner operator?

To thrive as a Tanker Owner Operator, you need a valid CDL with appropriate endorsements, a strong understanding of safe driving practices, and experience handling liquid or hazardous cargo. Proficiency with ELDs (Electronic Logging Devices), GPS navigation systems, and knowledge of DOT regulations are essential, along with certifications such as Hazmat or Tanker endorsements when required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and interpersonal skills help build strong relationships with clients and ensure efficient load deliveries. These abilities ensure the safe and timely transport of materials while maintaining regulatory compliance and high customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by tanker owner operators on the job?

Tanker Owner Operators often face challenges such as managing strict delivery schedules, adapting to fluctuating fuel costs, and maintaining their own equipment to meet industry safety standards. Transporting liquid or hazardous cargo also requires constant vigilance and adherence to safety protocols, especially when loading or unloading materials. Additionally, since many Tanker Owner Operators work independently, balancing administrative tasks like invoicing and regulatory paperwork with driving responsibilities can be demanding. However, those who are organized and proactive find the work rewarding and enjoy the autonomy it offers.

How to become a tanker owner operator?

To become a tanker owner operator, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), experience driving large vehicles, and a clean driving record. You must also secure appropriate insurance, purchase or lease a tanker truck, and obtain necessary permits for transporting liquids. Building relationships with shippers and understanding safety regulations are essential for success in this role.

Job description

Field Technician / Driver

About RAD PROS

At RAD PROS, you are never just a number on a spreadsheet. We are a tight-knit, collaborative team where our Field Technicians work hand in hand with every level of the company—from our equipment operators to the CEO - we give 110% to meet our customers’ goals.

Headquartered 6 miles south of Watkins, Colorado, RAD PROS is a nationally recognized leader in environmental and field services. We specialize in radioactive and hazardous waste management, serving major clients across the oil and gas, mining, municipal water treatment, manufacturing, and government/private clean-up sectors.

As industry pioneers in Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) and Technically Enhanced NORM (TE)NORM management, we are the trusted experts in site characterization, remediation, decommissioning, and demolition. The RAD PROS team possesses over 100 years of combined experience, so we’ve seen it all. We operate a privately owned and operated company built on the core values of stewardship, professionalism, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities & Scope of Work

As a Field Technician, you will execute hands-on environmental remediation, waste management, and industrial maintenance tasks. Your core duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Packaging & Transport: Be part of the team to execute safe and compliant waste packaging, labeling, and securing of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials for transport on truck and trailers.  Possession of a current CDL is required.
  • Logistics & Coordination: Work with key subcontractors for project execution and the transport materials, equipment, and waste to and from project sites in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Radiological Surveys & Sampling: After completing training, conduct technical radiological surveys with hand-held equipment, capture collected data (written/ipad), collect material samples (soil, water, and waste), take notes, pictures, and document general site observations for site characterization.
  • Oil & Gas Facility Maintenance: Perform manual labor that includes vessel filter swap-outs, deep cleaning of equipment, packaging / sampling waste, collect documentation, and safely complete all tasks with the proper PPE.
  • Tank & Pipeline Operations: Execute tank pump-outs with hand-tools and industrial equipment, perform confined space entry and cleanings, and support specialized pipeline integrity tool cleaning operations (pigging).
  • Civil & Environmental Remediation: Perform manual labor and equipment operation (training provided) to rebuild, line, and restore environmental containment ponds, as well as hands-on site demolition and decommissioning.
  • Facility & Asset Upkeep: Maintain, clean, and service company equipment to ensure field readiness, while keeping the warehouse organized, safe, and efficiently structured.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate must be a team player, a "people person," and possess a genuine hunger to learn. While we provide top-tier training, we need someone with a strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to retain and apply new field operation skills.

  • CDL: Possession of a current CDL required, preferably with Hot-Shot experience.  Tanker Endorsement is helpful but not necessary, and do not require Tractor Trailer or Air-Brakes endorsements.
  • Skills & Aptitude: Able to apply strong mechanical aptitude to various hands-on field situations.
  • Learning Agility: A quick learner who can easily master new principles/techniques and integrate them into daily work.
  • Drive: Self-motivated with a strong internal work ethic.
  • Safety & Compliance: Passionate about working safely, able to follow strict safety protocols, and able to pass an initial and regular drug/alcohol testing.
  • Background: Possess a clean criminal background and a clean DMV driving record.
  • Physical Demands: Physically capable of lifting a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Travel & Schedule: Willing to travel for out-of-state projects (100% company-paid expenses) and work long hours/overtime when a project demands it.
  • Bonus Points: Heavy equipment experience is a plus, but not necessary. Prior experience in hydro-vac operation, industrial tank cleaning, environmental remediation, or general environmental field services is highly desired. RAD PROS will provide training for all machinery, specialized equipment, and field functions.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive Hourly Wage: $25.00 to $32.50+ per hour, highly dependent on your experience, certifications, and capabilities.
  • Premium Pay: Opportunities for higher pay rates on State and Federal Davis-Bacon Act projects.
  • Overtime: Paid overtime is available and frequently required to meet the schedule.
  • Growth Potential: Nearly unlimited growth and compensation upside for a dedicated worker ready to learn and contribute.
  • Benefits Package: Robust medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Financial Future: Company profit-sharing and access to a 401(k) plan with a company match.
