What is a tanker driver for recent graduates?

Tanker Drivers are professional truck drivers who operate vehicles designed to transport liquids or gases in large tanks, such as fuel, chemicals, or food-grade products. For recent graduates, this role typically involves completing specialized training to safely handle hazardous or sensitive materials, obtaining necessary licenses like a CDL with tanker and possibly hazardous materials endorsements, and learning industry regulations. It's a career that offers steady employment, opportunities for travel, and competitive pay, but requires attention to safety and compliance. Entry-level tanker driving positions often provide on-the-job training and mentorship to help new graduates transition into the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tanker driver for recent graduates?

To thrive as a Tanker Driver, recent graduates need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, strong knowledge of safety regulations, and basic mechanical skills. Familiarity with tanker-specific vehicles, GPS navigation systems, and electronic logging devices (ELDs) is typically required, along with certifications such as HAZMAT if transporting hazardous materials. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong communication skills are crucial for safely managing cargo and interacting with clients and dispatchers. These competencies ensure legal compliance, safe transport of materials, and effective communication—vital for both safety and efficiency in the role.

What are some common challenges recent graduates may face when starting as a tanker driver, and how can they overcome them?

Recent graduates entering the role of Tanker Driver often face challenges such as adapting to long hours on the road, mastering the safe handling of hazardous materials, and understanding complex regulations. New drivers can overcome these challenges by taking advantage of thorough company training programs, seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, and staying up-to-date with industry safety practices. Building strong communication skills is also essential, as Tanker Drivers regularly coordinate with dispatchers, clients, and maintenance teams to ensure timely and safe deliveries.

BURNCO is a leading supplier of construction materials, proudly serving communities across North America. We are committed to quality, safety, and customer service, and we're building a team that reflects those same values.

Are you an experienced Class A CDL driver who takes pride in safety and reliability? BURNCO is hiring a Tanker Driver for our Texas Operations in Justin. If you have tanker or bulk hauling experience and a strong work ethic, we want to hear from you!

In this role, you will operate and maintain tanker equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and timely deliveries. You will perform inspections, follow dispatch schedules, and uphold our high standards for safety, professionalism, and teamwork.

What you will be doing

  • Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure all equipment meets DOT and FMCSA safety standards
  • Keep your equipment clean and road-ready — wash your tractor and trailer at least once a week and maintain a tidy cab
  • Take part in monthly safety meetings to stay current on best practices and company procedures
  • Report any accidents, incidents, or injuries right away (no matter how minor) to your supervisor once it's safe to do so
  • Follow dispatch directions and schedules accurately, maintaining strong communication with the team

What we would like from you

  • Valid Class A CDL with at least 2 years of verifiable tractor / trailer driving experience
  • A High school diploma or equivalent education required
  • Previous experience operating a tanker trailer or bulk tanker is preferred
  • Comfortable working in environments with potential for high noise levels
  • Able to work safely at heights of up to 9 feet
  • Strong sense of direction and ability to follow dispatch instructions accurately
  • Clean driving record that meets BURNCO's minimum qualifications
  • Dependable, detail oriented, and capable of carrying out driving duties efficiently and correctly
  • Focused, confident, and observant while on the job
  • Solid understanding of traffic laws and safe driving practices

Location and other key details:

  • This is a full-time permanent field-based position at our Justin site
  • This is a safety-sensitive position requiring successful completion of PSP, MVR, background check, pre-employment drug test, and DOT physical assessment prior to hire
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Able to perform essential physical tasks including climbing (stairs and ladders), balancing, squatting, bending, reaching overhead, and operating mobile equipment and hand / foot controls
  • Comfortable lifting and moving objects of various sizes and weights and using vibration tools when required
  • Capable of working safely in outdoor environments across all weather conditions, at heights up to 9 feet, and in areas with potential for high noise levels

Why BURNCO?

  • Be part of a supportive, high-performing team that values your growth and success
  • Enjoy competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, paid time off, and more
  • Experience our inclusive, collaborative, and safety-focused culture
  • Take part in team events, professional development activities, and community initiatives

Join us and be part of an organization that values safety above all. BURNCO offers a supportive and dynamic work environment where you can truly make a difference. With competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for professional growth, BURNCO is where you can thrive while contributing to a culture of safety and excellence.
