Job description

Talen Energy is looking for candidates to fill openings for Plant Technician-FGD Wastewater Treatment Operator. This position would be located at the Talen Energy Brandon Shores facility in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). Preferred candidate qualifications include post-high school courses in engineering mathematics, physical science and/or technical oriented studies, and five years' experience in industrial wastewater treatment. The Brandon Shores Plant is a fully scrubbed coal-fired generating station. The position reports to the Plant Environmental Manager.

The expected salary range for this position is $70,000.00 to $100,000.00 annually. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energy's Short-Term Incentive program.

Primary Purpose & Summary:
Operate and maintain the FGD Wastewater Treatment Plant (FGDWWT) and Raw Water (absorber water make-up) system safely and reliably, ensuring environmental compliance.

Work requires 12-hour rotating shift work schedule, including holidays and weekends, in addition to overtime and possible call-ins. This is a multi-skilled position requiring the knowledge and skills in the Plant Operator Qualifications Training Program, as well as development of basic knowledge of plant maintenance (mechanical, electrical, and instrument & controls).

Responsibilities:
1. Startup, operate and shutdown the FGDWWT and Raw Water system through remote controls, video display terminals (VDTs) and keyboards.
2. Determine and manage all needed flow rates through FGDWWT and Raw Water system, including sludge volumes.
3. Manage operation of filter presses--filling and dropping/coordination with material.
4. Serve as lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) authority for FGDWWT and Raw Water systems.
5. Oversee chemical unloads--over 70 bulk trailers unloaded annually and over 260 totes (over half of which are Hazmat).
6. Conduct routine sample collection and lab analysis.
7. Perform rounds at FGD WWT plant, Raw Water system, Cox Creek Lift Station, Tank 2B, U1 & U2 Circ Water chemical injection skids.
8. Support Plant IWWT as needed and fill in for plant operations per training.
9. Perform routine maintenance and PM's on equipment.
10.Troubleshoot various pieces of equipment and systems.

Skills/Competencies:

Education & Experience Preferred:
1. Successful completion of post-high school courses in engineering mathematics, physical science and/or technical oriented studies.
2. Five years' experience in industrial wastewater treatment.
3. Experience with personal computers and the Company's applications software systems.

Licenses/Certifications Required:
1. Valid driver's license and ability to meet Company driving standards.
2. MDE requires all FGDWWT techs obtain and maintain a Class 7 Industrial Wastewater license.
3. FGDFWWT techs are required to be DOT Hazmat certified to unload DOT Hazmat totes.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Must possess mobility to work in an environment that requires the ability and willingness to walk, climb, and lift, and work outside in severe weather conditions. Ability to work frequent overtime and/or weekends on short notice. This position requires working a rotating shift schedule, which routinely involves weekend and overnight duty. Must be able to use standard office equipment, including a computer, stamina to maintain attention to detail, despite interruptions, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen for long periods of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the radio.

The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Must be able to regularly and repeatedly climb stairs, ladders, and work on elevated platforms.
Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
Must be able to lift 45 pounds overhead and 75 pounds from the floor to 36 inches.
Must be willing to travel to other facilities if needed.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color distinction with vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Must be able to work around high voltage and heights.
Must have manual dexterity and ability to manipulate keyboards.
Must be willing to work overtime to cover other shifts.

Mental Demands:
While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills, read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve complex problems, observe and interpret situations, use math and mathematical reasoning; deal with changing, intensive deadlines, and interact with internal and external clients. Must be able to concentrate while under time constraints.

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and wet or humid conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to toxic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
Exposure to hazards associated with power and hand tools, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures and confined spaces; and may be regularly subject to external environmental conditions such as cold, heat dust, snow or noise and fumes from equipment or chemicals.
Occupationally hazardous noise exposure may occur in the power plant or other locations where heavy industrial equipment is in use.
