What is a tactical engineer?

A Tactical Engineer is a professional who specializes in providing technical support and engineering solutions in high-pressure, often military or law enforcement, operational environments. Their work involves designing, implementing, and maintaining equipment, systems, and infrastructure to ensure mission success and safety. Tactical Engineers may be tasked with tasks such as fortification construction, explosive ordnance disposal, communications setup, and rapid problem-solving during operations. They work closely with operational teams to adapt engineering principles to field conditions, making their role vital in both planning and real-time scenarios.

How does a tactical engineer typically collaborate with other teams during mission planning and execution?

Tactical Engineers work closely with both operational teams and technical specialists to ensure mission objectives are achieved efficiently and safely. They often participate in cross-functional briefings, provide technical assessments, and advise on the deployment of specialized equipment. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as Tactical Engineers must translate technical solutions into actionable strategies for field teams. Their collaborative input is crucial during both the planning phase and real-time operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tactical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tactical Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, problem-solving, and operational planning, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with military technologies, tactical communication systems, and certifications such as Security Clearance are commonly required. Excellent teamwork, adaptability, and clear communication are vital soft skills for success in dynamic and high-pressure environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring mission effectiveness, safety, and efficient technical support in tactical operations.

What is the difference between Tactical Engineer vs Combat Engineer?

AspectTactical EngineerCombat Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, military or specialized certificationsEngineering degree, military engineering certifications
Work EnvironmentMilitary operations, field deployments, strategic planningMilitary combat zones, construction sites, demolition tasks
Industry UsageMilitary, defense, governmentMilitary, defense, engineering units

Both Tactical Engineers and Combat Engineers work within military settings, often sharing similar credentials and environments. Tactical Engineers focus on strategic planning and technical support, while Combat Engineers are more involved in construction, demolition, and field operations. Understanding these distinctions helps clarify their roles in military engineering projects.

Job description

Lead Design and Analysis Engineer

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Defense, Space & Security is hiring a Lead Design and Analysis Engineer in Berkeley, MO. Join a fast-paced Phantom Works program responsible for integrating highly complex system-of-systems mission capabilities across sensors, mission management, communications, networks, and weapons/effector interfaces. This role is for a senior technical contributor who will shape and lead the integration of multiple subsystems and external sources into cohesive tactical mission capabilities that perform reliably in operational environments.

You will lead the definition, architecture, integration, and verification of mission solutions spanning payloads, distributed sensors, datalinks, mission management functions, and payloads. This position requires deep systems engineering expertise, strong SysML/MBSE capability, real-time and embedded integration experience, and the ability to influence technical direction across programs and disciplines.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead system-level definition and decomposition of requirements for system-of-systems mission integration across sensors, mission management, communications, and weapons/payload interfaces.

  • Shape and maintain SysML/MBSE architecture models that capture system behavior, functional decomposition, interface definitions, requirement traceability, and verification strategy across the lifecycle.

  • Establish and drive end-to-end mission system architectures, including interdependencies, data flows, timing budgets, synchronization, operational constraints, and integration assumptions.

  • Lead integration of onboard and offboard systems, including distributed sensors, datalinks, external mission services, and partner-provided capabilities.

  • Develop and evaluate mission logic related to sensor integration, track management, mission planning, state awareness, decision support, and effect coordination.

  • Lead simulation, test, and verification strategy development; guide lab, integration, and field testing to validate system behavior against model assumptions and operational requirements.

  • Perform system-level analysis of failure modes, sensitivity, robustness, and degraded operations; define fault detection, recovery, and resilience behaviors for mission-critical architectures.

  • Use MBSE methods to drive trade studies, architecture decisions, change impact assessments, and technical reviews across the broader mission system.

  • Produce concise technical documentation supporting design decisions, model assumptions, verification results, integration artifacts, and compliance/safety evidence.

  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and recommended paths forward to leadership, customers, and cross-functional partners.

  • Serve as a key technical authority for assigned capability areas, from requirements through architecture modeling, prototype, integration, verification, optimization, deployment, and sustainment.

  • Mentor junior engineers and influence integration standards, reusable patterns, and best practices across the organization.

  • Represent the program in technical reviews, demonstrations, and stakeholder engagements as a recognized subject matter expert.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills and Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus in Electrical, Mechanical or Aeronautical), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement

  • 14+ years of related work experience and a bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of related work experience and technical education

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills and Experience):

  • Experience working in MSOSA, or similar Model Based Systems Engineering tools

  • Experience with integration of DoD tactical platforms sensors and subsystems

  • Experience developing requirements and applicable traceability from the weapon system down to subsystems

  • Experience with avionics integration testing, analysis tools (e.g. Matlab or others), and flight test
