How much do Tableau developers make?

Tableau developers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Professionals with advanced skills in data visualization, SQL, and certifications may earn higher salaries, especially in competitive markets.

Are Tableau developers in demand?

Tableau developers are in high demand due to the increasing need for data visualization and business intelligence solutions across industries. Organizations seek professionals skilled in Tableau, data analysis, and dashboard creation to support data-driven decision-making, leading to strong job growth and competitive salaries in this field.

What are Tableau Developers?

Tableau Developers are professionals who specialize in creating, managing, and optimizing data visualizations using Tableau software. They work with data sources to design interactive dashboards and reports that help organizations analyze and interpret complex data. Tableau Developers often collaborate with business stakeholders to understand reporting needs and ensure that data insights are accessible, actionable, and visually compelling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tableau Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tableau Developer, you need strong skills in data analysis, visualization, and proficiency with SQL, often supported by a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Familiarity with Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, and certification such as Tableau Desktop Specialist are commonly required, along with experience in data warehousing and ETL processes. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you translate business requirements into actionable, insightful dashboards. These skills ensure the delivery of meaningful, accurate visualizations that drive data-informed decision-making in organizations.

What Does a Tableau Developer Do?

Tableau software collects and translates large amounts of data into easy-to-read, interactive platforms. These platforms enable businesses to analyze and interpret results from various aspects of their company. Tableau developers are specialized programmers who create tailored reports that assist companies in meeting their goals. These programmers understand the importance of the ETL (extract, transform, load) process of transferring data from the primary source to a new location and know how to organize and use that data in productive ways.

Do I need coding for Tableau?

Tableau Developers typically do not need extensive coding skills, as Tableau is a visual analytics tool that emphasizes drag-and-drop functionality. However, knowledge of scripting languages like SQL or Tableau's calculated fields can enhance data manipulation and customization. Basic understanding of data structures and database concepts is also beneficial for more advanced work.

What are some common challenges Tableau Developers face when working with large datasets, and how can they address them?

Tableau Developers often encounter performance issues when visualizing large datasets, such as slow dashboard loading times and laggy interactivity. To address these challenges, developers can optimize data extracts, use efficient calculations, and limit the number of visualizations on a single dashboard. Collaborating closely with data engineers to ensure proper data modeling and leveraging Tableau's built-in performance optimization tools are also key strategies. Staying proactive about these challenges helps deliver fast, interactive, and insightful dashboards to stakeholders.

Is Tableau worth learning in 2026?

Tableau remains a valuable skill for Tableau Developers in 2026 due to its widespread use in data visualization and business intelligence. Learning Tableau can enhance job prospects, especially when combined with knowledge of SQL and data modeling. Staying updated with new features and certifications can further improve career opportunities.

Job description

Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. We embody cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence in advanced robotics, quickly moving from the research lab into increasingly impactful roles across industrial spaces.

The Information Technology team at Boston Dynamics is looking for a Business Intelligence Engineer to transform our Atlas data into actionable insights. We are looking for a data storyteller who thrives in the Snowflake ecosystem and has a passion for building intuitive dashboards in Tableau and Looker.

As a Business Intelligence Engineer, you won't just be building reports, you'll be the bridge between complex data structures and engaging visuals. You will play a key role in leveraging our Atlas data, ensuring that our stakeholders can visualize the high-fidelity data they need to drive the business forward.

You will partner with cross-functional teams to translate business questions into technical requirements. From developing Snowflake queries to architecting Looker Models (LookML) and Tableau workbooks, you will ensure our Atlas data sources are scalable, performant, and-most importantly-useful.

How you will make an impact:

  • Data Visualization & Storytelling: Design and maintain high-impact dashboards in Tableau and Looker, turning complex Atlas datasets into clear, visual narratives for executive and operational stakeholders.

  • Semantic Layer Management: Build and optimize LookML models and Tableau data sources to ensure a "single source of truth" across the organization.

  • Snowflake Optimization: Write and refine complex SQL to transform raw Atlas data into performant reporting tables, focusing on query efficiency and cost-governance.

  • Pipeline Collaboration: Partner with Data Engineers to define requirements for data ingestion and modeling, ensuring the underlying Snowflake architecture supports end-user needs.

  • Stakeholder Enablement: Act as a subject matter expert for our BI toolset, conducting training sessions and office hours to empower business users to perform self-service analysis.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience: 5+ years of professional experience in Business Intelligence, Data Engineering, or Data Analytics.

  • SQL Mastery: Strong proficiency in SQL for data transformation, including experience with CTEs, window functions, and performance tuning.

  • BI Tool Proficiency: Hands-on experience building and deploying production-level dashboards in Tableau and/or Looker (including LookML development).

  • Data Warehousing: Experience working within databases, specifically navigating schemas and understanding performance.

  • Python: Proficiency in Python for data manipulation or automation tasks.

  • Analytical Mindset: Proven ability to take a vague business request and translate it into a structured technical solution.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Robotics Data Familiarity: Prior experience working with Robotics datasets or similar large-scale distributed databases.

  • Snowflake): Experience using and maintaining Snowflake, specifically Tables, Views, Tasks, Functions and Procedures.

  • Version Control: Familiarity with Git workflows for managing LookML or dbt code.

  • Certification: Tableau Desktop Specialist or Looker Business Analyst certifications are a plus.

We are interested in all qualified candidates eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.

The base pay range for this position is between $90,000.00 to $110,000.00 annually. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors, including, but not limited to, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This range represents a good-faith estimate of compensation at the time of posting. Boston Dynamics offers a generous Benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, and an annual bonus structure. Additional details regarding these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer for employment.
