What does a remote Tableau developer do?

A remote Tableau Developer designs, develops, and maintains data visualization solutions using Tableau software while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities include connecting to various data sources, creating interactive dashboards and reports, and collaborating with stakeholders to translate business requirements into actionable insights. They also optimize data models, ensure data accuracy, and may provide support and training to end-users to help them make data-driven decisions.

How to become a remote Tableau developer?

The primary qualifications for becoming a remote Tableau developer are a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and several years of experience with Tableau products. This is a relatively senior position that requires extensive knowledge of the base Tableau software, so most people spend several years working in an office before they transfer to this remote role. Fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of this job requires communication, research, and programming skills as well as the ability to turn design goals into programming objectives. Tableau developers often work as part of a larger team, so teamwork skills are also essential to success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Tableau developer?

To thrive as a Tableau Developer remotely, you need strong data analysis skills, expertise in Tableau Desktop and Server, and a background in computer science, statistics, or related fields. Familiarity with SQL, data warehousing solutions, and certifications like Tableau Desktop Specialist are often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication are vital soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills ensure you can independently create effective data visualizations, meet client needs, and contribute to data-driven decision-making, even while working remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Tableau developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Tableau Developers often encounter challenges such as limited direct communication with stakeholders and difficulties in understanding business requirements without face-to-face interactions. To overcome these, it's crucial to establish regular virtual meetings, use collaborative tools for feedback, and maintain clear documentation throughout the project. Building strong relationships with team members and proactively seeking clarification on project goals can also help ensure successful report development and data visualization delivery.

Director, Analytics Systems

Beacon Biosignals

Boston, MA โ€ข On-site, Remote

Full-time

PTO

Posted 15 days ago

Job description

Beacon Biosignals is transforming precision medicine for the brain, from clinical development to clinical care. For Life Sciences partners, we offer the leading at-home EEG platform for clinical development of novel therapeutics for neurological, psychiatric, and sleep disorders. Our Diagnostics business is building the most comprehensive at-home platform for precision diagnostics, combining EEG and cardiopulmonary signals to deliver reimbursable assessments for sleep and central nervous system disorders. Together, we're changing the way patients are diagnosed and treated for any disorder that affects brain physiology.
Beacon Biosignals is seeking a Director, Analytics Systems to manage our Analytics Systems Team. The Analytics System Team is responsible for building and maintaining Beacon's Analytics Suite products that serve our Life Sciences and Diagnostic customers, developing tooling and pipelines that enable Beacon scientists to efficiently curate clinical trial data and perform rigorous scientific analyses, and enabling the scalable computation, organization, and tracking of novel biomarker features. This includes evolving our data infrastructure to support a centralized feature store and integrating foundation models into our core analytical pipelines. In this role, you'll manage 6-10 engineers and will be responsible for the continued development and success of your team and its products. This role reports directly to Beacon's VP of Analytics and Machine Learning.
Beacon's robust asynchronous work practices ensure a first-class remote work experience, but we also have in-person office hubs available located in Boston, New York, and Paris. The Analytics Systems Team is currently distributed across American time zones.
As a successful engineering director at Beacon, you'll...
  • Manage 6-10 engineers (and eventually managers) on Beacon's Analytics Systems Team, coaching them to pursue opportunities to grow their impact at Beacon, and guiding them to overcome challenges along their journey.
  • Develop and share a deep understanding of the Analytics Systems Team's activity and products to facilitate continuous improvement of the team's internal processes and integration with Beacon as a whole.
  • Act as a steward of Beacon's engineering practices and maintain high bars for engineering quality, productivity, and accountability while motivating the team to continuously raise those bars over time.
  • Help your team scope out and prioritize tactical week-to-week work in direct connection with Beacon's wider strategic initiatives, and in coordination with other teams and domains.
  • Ensure your team's longer-term development roadmap is outcome-oriented, up-to-date, aligned with the company's objectives and other teams' priorities, and communicated effectively to other stakeholders within Beacon.
  • Own project management responsibilities for team initiatives, including defining scope, managing timelines, and ensuring expectations are set both internally and externally.
  • Drive product direction and discovery for the Analytics Systems Team, establishing the processes, venues, and cross-functional connections that build deep product intuition across the team, and owning prioritization decisions that ensure the team is consistently working on the highest-impact problems for Beacon's customers and business.
  • Craft, iterate, and execute on a forward-looking strategic vision for how Analytics Systems can reshape how Beacon tackles Life Science projects, supports diagnostic workflows, and enables rapid biomarker discovery using real world data.

What you will bring
  • 6+ years of management experience and familiarity with managing mid- to large-sized analytics engineering teams that have tackled big problems, and can speak to the underlying processes that drove failures and successes encountered by the team along the way.
  • Experience and knowledge across analytics engineering (e.g. dbt, SQLMesh), data modeling and pipelines (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks, Argo, Airflow), and BI tooling (e.g., Superset, Looker, Tableau) that allows you assess approaches, guide tradeoffs, and make sound decisions.
  • You have experience and familiarity working in the medical device space, clinical diagnostics, real-world-data, pharma/biotech or other related fields.
  • You've worked in a regulated industry before, and have successfully navigated the tension between fast-paced agile development and strict design controls.
  • You demonstrate a bias towards simplicity, avoid misallocating complexity, and try to impose structure at the right time - not too early or too late.
  • You bring strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align partners around decisions, tradeoffs, and evolving plans, including in regulated or quality-sensitive environments.
  • You have a knack for quickly internalizing the needs of users and the products that serve them, and a track record of translating that understanding into prioritization decisions that consistently direct teams toward the highest-impact work.
  • You have a track record of being able to see around corners, anticipating potential company-wide needs and opportunities, and directly tackling them before they become urgent.
  • You have a keen sense for the bandwidth limitations, technical debt, and non-iterative processes that drag a project down, and you've employed effective strategies for preventing/remedying these issues in the past.

The base salary range for this role is determined based on past experience, specific skills and qualifications. The base salary is one component of the total compensation package, which includes equity, PTO and other benefits.
At Beacon, we've found that cultural and scientific impact is driven most by those that lead by example. As such, we're always seeking new contributors whose work demonstrates an avid curiosity, a bias towards simplicity, an eye for composability, a self-service mindset, and - most of all - a deep empathy towards colleagues, stakeholders, users, and patients. We believe a diverse team builds more robust systems and achieves higher impact.
