What does a systems requirements engineer do?

A Systems Requirements Engineer defines, analyzes, and manages system requirements to ensure a project meets stakeholder needs. They work with cross-functional teams to gather and document functional and non-functional requirements, ensuring alignment with business and technical objectives. They also maintain traceability, validate requirements, and support testing and system implementation. This role is critical in preventing scope creep and ensuring project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a systems requirements engineer?

To thrive as a Systems Requirements Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering, requirements analysis, and a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools (like IBM DOORS, Enterprise Architect), requirements management software, and certifications such as INCOSE CSEP are often expected. Strong communication, analytical thinking, and attention to detail help you excel in capturing and translating stakeholder needs into technical specifications. These skills ensure that systems are developed to meet precise requirements, reducing risks and strengthening project outcomes.

What are some typical challenges faced by systems requirements engineers in their daily work?

Systems Requirements Engineers often face the challenge of balancing diverse stakeholder interests while ensuring technical feasibility and compliance with industry standards. They frequently need to manage changes to requirements throughout the lifecycle of a project, which requires strong documentation and version control skills.
