What is a systems engineer contract?

A Systems Engineer Contract job is a temporary or project-based position where an engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex systems. These roles often involve working with hardware, software, networking, and security components to ensure system functionality and efficiency. Contract Systems Engineers may work for a specific duration or on a particular project for a company, typically through a consulting firm or as independent contractors. They are expected to collaborate with cross-functional teams, troubleshoot issues, and optimize system performance. The contract terms, duration, and scope of work can vary based on the employer's needs.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges of a systems engineer contract?

As a Systems Engineer working on a contract basis, your daily responsibilities usually include managing infrastructure deployments, configuring and maintaining servers, troubleshooting system issues, and optimizing network performance for client projects. You may face challenges such as quickly adapting to new environments, understanding legacy systems, or integrating new technologies with existing IT infrastructure. Contract roles often require working independently while effectively collaborating with internal IT teams, project managers, and other stakeholders. This environment provides valuable exposure to diverse industries and technical challenges, which can greatly enhance your experience and open avenues for future permanent or advanced contract opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for a systems engineer contract?

To thrive as a Systems Engineer Contract, you need a strong background in systems architecture, troubleshooting, and integration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools such as VMware, Linux/Windows server environments, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and relevant certifications like CompTIA, Cisco, or Microsoft are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills set top candidates apart in contract roles where autonomy and collaboration are both crucial. These skills and attributes ensure efficient delivery, adaptability to different project requirements, and successful collaboration in dynamic technical environments.

Job description

Position Summary

We are recruiting for multiple Modernization Systems Engineers for the Engineering, Professional, and Administrative Support Services (EPASS) Contract based out of Peterson SFB, in Colorado Springs, CO supporting the Ground-Based Radar Digitization (GBRD) program.  The Ground-Based Radar Digitization (GBRD) program modernizes the legacy radar systems associated with the five Upgraded Early Warning Radars (UEWRs) and the Perimeter Acquisition Radar Attack Characterization System (PARCS), which provide continuous surveillance for missile and satellite detection, tracking, and reporting to support Missile Warning, Missile Defense, and Space Domain Awareness missions. This modernization effort replaces outdated analog and hardware-only components with advanced digital, scalable solutions that leverage a government-owned, open-architecture approach.  An additional program goal is to address existing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the legacy systems by improving cybersecurity capabilities, to include threat detection and data protection.

This is a full-time position located at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO

Responsibilities

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Provide systems engineering oversight across the entire technical baseline. Review and assess the prime contractor's systems engineering plans, processes, and artifacts to ensure they align with Government objectives and best practices.
  • Review and provide technical recommendations on the full set of contractor-developed system and subsystem requirements, ensuring they are clear, verifiable, and properly allocated and traced.
  • Oversee and assess contractor-led engineering trade studies, providing the Government with independent analysis of alternatives to ensure decisions balance performance, cost, schedule, and risk across the portfolio.
  • Manage and provide oversight of the requirements verification process. This includes reviewing and assessing the contractor's Verification and Validation (V&V) plans, Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP), and the Requirements Verification Matrix (RVM).
  • Manage the Government's oversight of the deficiency reporting process. Track and report on the status of all identified system deficiencies, ensuring they are properly documented, prioritized, and driven to resolution by the contractor.
  • Evaluate the overall system architecture, including external and internal interfaces, to ensure it is robust, scalable, and compliant with Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) principles.
  • Monitor system integration activities, identify potential cross-domain (hardware, software, cybersecurity) integration risks, and provide the Government with risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide continuous technical support and recommendations to the Government team throughout all phases of the acquisition lifecycle, including major technical reviews (e.g., SRR, PDR, CDR), configuration management, and system-level testing.
