What does a systems administrator do?

A systems administrator manages and maintains an organization’s computer systems, servers, and networks to ensure they run efficiently and securely. They install, configure, troubleshoot hardware and software, monitor system performance, and implement security measures, often using tools like operating systems, scripting, and monitoring software. Certifications such as CompTIA Server+ or Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) can enhance job prospects.

Will AI replace sys admins?

Systems administrators perform tasks such as managing networks, servers, and security, which require problem-solving and oversight that AI cannot fully replicate. While AI tools can automate routine tasks and improve efficiency, human oversight remains essential for complex troubleshooting, decision-making, and system design. Therefore, AI is more likely to augment rather than replace sys admins in the foreseeable future.

Can you be a sysadmin without a degree?

Systems administrators can often enter the field without a degree by gaining relevant skills through certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA, and practical experience with operating systems, networking, and scripting. Employers may prioritize technical knowledge and hands-on experience over formal education, though some roles may prefer or require a degree.

What Is the Job Description of a Systems Administrator?

The primary duties of a system administrator are to install, update, and maintain computer systems while managing user access regimes. As a systems administrator, you have administrative privileges to change settings, install or remove software, and access security functions unavailable to normal users. A systems administrator might oversee multiple machines at once, or even an entire network. You provide technical support to users who are experiencing problems and collaborate with network administrators to ensure the continued performance of the network. As a systems administrator, you determine the level of access a user has to network information and what operations they can perform, limiting users to only what they need to perform their job.

What are some typical challenges a Systems Administrator faces when managing both on-premises and cloud infrastructure?

Systems Administrators often juggle responsibilities across on-premises servers and cloud-based platforms, which can introduce challenges such as ensuring seamless integration, maintaining consistent security policies, and managing access controls. Balancing updates, backups, and monitoring tools across different environments requires strong organizational skills and up-to-date technical knowledge. Effective communication with other IT team members and end users is also crucial for troubleshooting and minimizing downtime.

What are Systems Administrators?

Systems Administrators, often called SysAdmins, are IT professionals responsible for managing, maintaining, and supporting computer systems and networks within an organization. Their duties include installing hardware and software, monitoring system performance, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring system security and data integrity. They play a key role in minimizing downtime, performing regular backups, and updating systems to keep an organization's IT infrastructure running smoothly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Systems Administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Administrator, you need a solid understanding of operating systems, network management, and security protocols, typically supported by a relevant degree or certifications like CompTIA Network+, Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA), or Linux+. Familiarity with tools such as Active Directory, virtualization platforms, and configuration management systems is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you respond quickly to issues and work collaboratively with IT teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maintaining system reliability, minimizing downtime, and ensuring secure, efficient IT operations.

Job description

Role Overview
We are seeking a resourceful, problem-solving Marketing Technology (MarTech) Systems Administrator to oversee the health, administration, and continuous improvement of our core software ecosystem. In this role, you will bridge the gap between technical infrastructure and team execution. You will be responsible for managing software administration, troubleshooting issues, implementing feature requests, and driving the practical adoption of AI tools within our architecture.
The ideal candidate has a strong foundational background in marketing technology, a natural curiosity for learning new software, and a creative approach to systems health and documentation.
Key Responsibilities
  • System Health & Software Administration: Independently monitor, maintain, and manage the health of our core SaaS applications and tech stack. Ensure integrations run smoothly, data flows correctly, and system uptime is optimized.
  • Issue Tracking, Testing & Documentation: Act as the primary point of contact for internal technical issues. Thoroughly document user feedback, reproduce and triage bug reports, and run quality assurance (QA) testing on fixes before they go live.
  • Feature Implementation & App Management: Handle incoming requests to modify or expand our software capabilities. This includes configuring custom fields, updating user permissions, adjusting workflow automations, and deploying new platform features.
  • AI Tool Integration & Adoption: Assist in evaluating, implementing, and embedding practical AI tools into our existing technical architecture. Create documentation and provide functional support to help internal teams adopt these tools into their daily workflows.

Qualifications & Skills
Required Experience & Technical Skills
  • Professional Experience: 2-3 years of hands-on experience working within a marketing technology (MarTech), operations, or SaaS software administration environment.
  • Software & App Management: Foundational experience configuring and administering common business and marketing tools (e.g., CRMs like HubSpot, project management tools like Asana/Airtable, and communication platforms).
  • Testing & Documentation: Proven ability to clearly document technical processes, write step-by-step reproduction steps for bugs, and conduct structured testing.
  • AI Literacy: Familiarity with modern AI tools and a strong interest in learning how to technically implement and configure AI prompts, agents, or workflows into business systems.

Mindset & Soft Skills
  • Adaptable Problem Solver: A sharp analytical mindset with the ability to look at a software error or a new tool, independently research solutions, and figure out how it works.
  • Detail-Oriented & Organized: Highly structured in how you manage tasks, log issues, and maintain documentation so that systems remain clean and easy for others to navigate.
  • Strong Communicator: Ability to translate user feedback into clear technical tickets, and conversely, translate complex technical updates into simple instructions for the team.
