System Integration Developer information

What is a system integration developer?

System Integration Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain solutions that enable different software systems, applications, or databases to work together seamlessly. They are responsible for connecting disparate systems within an organization, often using APIs, middleware, or custom scripts. Their work ensures that data flows smoothly and processes are automated across platforms, improving efficiency and reducing manual work. System Integration Developers need strong programming skills, familiarity with integration tools, and a deep understanding of both the source and target systems involved.

What are some common challenges system integration developers face when working on large-scale integration projects?

System Integration Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between diverse systems, managing data consistency, and handling unexpected integration errors. Coordinating with multiple teams—such as software engineers, business analysts, and IT support—is critical to resolve issues quickly and maintain project timelines. Additionally, keeping up with evolving technologies and integration standards requires ongoing learning and adaptability. Addressing these challenges successfully can lead to smoother project execution and valuable experience for career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system integration developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Integration Developer, you need strong programming skills, knowledge of integration patterns, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with integration platforms (like MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, or Apache Camel), APIs, and messaging systems, as well as certifications in relevant tools, is often required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across technical and business teams. These competencies ensure seamless system connectivity, data consistency, and efficient workflows in complex IT environments.

What is the difference between System Integration Developer vs Software Engineer?

AspectSystem Integration DeveloperSoftware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; certifications like Cisco or Microsoft may helpBachelor's or higher in Computer Science or Software Engineering; certifications like AWS or Java may be relevant
Work EnvironmentTypically in IT or tech companies, focusing on integrating various systems and platformsIn diverse settings including tech firms, startups, or enterprise environments, developing software solutions
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in industries requiring system integration such as manufacturing, finance, and healthcareCommon across all tech-driven industries, including software, finance, and consulting

While both roles require strong technical skills and understanding of software systems, a System Integration Developer primarily focuses on connecting different systems and ensuring they work seamlessly together. In contrast, a Software Engineer develops and maintains software applications. The roles often overlap but differ in their core responsibilities and focus areas.

Job description

Job Title: Systems Test Engineer

Job Description

The Systems Test Engineer supports the verification and validation of advanced naval communications systems, focusing on internal and external communications suites for military and commercial applications. This role centers on integrating hardware, software, and mechanical subsystems into a fully functioning system and ensuring that overall system performance meets defined project requirements. The Systems Test Engineer contributes to factory acceptance testing, creates and executes test procedures, and plays a key role in qualifying complex systems for performance, reliability, and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams, project stakeholders, and technical leads to understand system capabilities, integration objectives, and verification requirements.
  • Participate in requirements and design reviews to ensure features and system functionality are testable and traceable to verification criteria.
  • Create and maintain verification strategies, test cases, and acceptance criteria for component-level, subsystem-level, and end-to-end system testing.
  • Prepare, execute, and document verification and validation activities, including functional, integration, and system-level testing.
  • Establish and maintain test environments, including hardware configuration, software setup, automation scripting, and coordination with external suppliers when equipment or technical support is required.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute automated and manual test solutions to evaluate system functionality, performance, reliability, and diagnostic capabilities.
  • Record, track, and communicate testing progress, risks, defects, and significant technical findings to project teams in a clear and timely manner.
  • Develop and run automated tests that cover functionality and diagnostic requirements for naval communication systems.
  • Support hardware and software integration efforts by validating interfaces, data flow, and overall system operation across subsystems.
  • Prepare detailed test reports, summarize verification and validation results, and provide recommendations based on test outcomes.
  • Contribute to factory acceptance testing (FAT) activities by reviewing and executing test procedures and validating system performance against project requirements.
  • Work closely with embedded software designers, hardware designers, product owners, and other stakeholders to plan and execute test iterations, track and report results, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate resolution of defects.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience in systems engineering, systems integration, or systems-level testing and verification and validation (V&V).
  • Hands-on experience with systems engineering practices, including verification, validation, and requirements gathering and analysis.
  • Proven experience in systems-level testing and integration, including functional, integration, and system-level test activities.
  • Substantial experience working with hardware systems, with at least 50% of prior experience involving hardware.
  • Experience in requirements management for both software and hardware systems, preferably using IBM DOORS.
  • Practical experience creating and executing test plans and test procedures for complex systems.
  • Experience with system integration activities, including validating interfaces and data flow between hardware and software components.
  • Exposure to aerospace, defense, or naval systems environments, particularly communication systems.
  • Knowledge of internal and external communication systems used in naval or defense applications.
  • Familiarity with relevant military standards that govern performance, reliability, and compliance for defense systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Naval experience, including involvement in certification activities for naval systems, is highly beneficial.
  • Specific experience with naval communication systems, including internal and external communications suites.
  • Proficiency with IBM DOORS for requirements management and traceability.
  • Scripting experience using languages such as Python or Bash to support test automation and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC) considerations in electronic and communication systems.
  • Interest in leading verification and validation activities and contributing to the direction of a V&V team.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, project-based environment where testing and integration efforts vary from project to project.
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills to clearly report test results, risks, and recommendations.

Work Environment

This position is based on-site 4–5 days per week in a collaborative engineering environment supporting one of the largest shipbuilding programs in Canadian history. The Systems Test Engineer works closely with embedded software designers, hardware designers, product owners, and project stakeholders in a laboratory and office setting, using a mix of hardware test benches, communication equipment, and software tools such as IBM DOORS and scripting environments (e.g., Python, Bash). The work involves hands-on interaction with hardware and software systems, participation in integration and factory acceptance testing, and regular cross-functional collaboration. The environment emphasizes project-based work, technical excellence, and continuous learning, offering the opportunity to contribute to complex defense-related systems and to play a key role in ensuring that products meet performance, reliability, and compliance requirements. Typical business hours apply, with on-site presence enabling direct access to test equipment, integration facilities, and engineering teams.
