Position Title:  Assistant Principal Elementary School             FLSA Status:  Exempt

Responsible to:  Building Principal                                            Supervises:  Students/Teachers

Evaluated by:  Building Principal                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Benefit Level:  C

Terms of Employment:  198 days

 

Evaluation Period:

  • Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per MCS Performance and Assessment procedures.
  • Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1.

 

Purpose of the Position:  Assist the principal in creating and maintaining an atmosphere that enables staff and students to attain the unique goals and objectives of Marion Community Schools.  Assist the principal in providing leadership for developing effective and efficient educational programs and services. 

Classified as Confidential Employee: Functional responsibilities or knowledge in connection with the issues involved in dealings between the school corporation and its employees require strict adherence to confidentiality.

Minimum Requirements:  The following qualifications represent the minimum requirements necessary for an individual to perform this position effectively.

  • Valid Indiana Administration and Supervision certification

 

Essential Functions of the Position:  The following functions have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.

  • Supervise discipline for the school and work proactively to improve student discipline.
  • Assist the principal in developing classroom assignments for students and teachers.
  • Assist the principal in the general administration of the school and serve as the chief building administrator in the absence of the principal.
  • Work with the members of the administrative team on school problems common to the system.
  • Assist with evaluation of certified and classified personnel.
  • Assist with supervision at curricular and extra-curricular activities.
  • Work with social worker with regard to community agencies and services.
  • Coordinate and update student discipline files and records.
  • Assist with the coordination of student arrival and dismissal from the building.
  • Attend parent conferences and case conferences.
  • Assist principal with coordination and orientation for new students.
  • Assist the principal in developing and administering the building safety and emergency procedures.
  • Assist the principal in the development of short and long-range plans for the improvement of the instructional program.

Secondary Functions of the Position:  The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Marion Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.

        Perform other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Building Principal and/or the Superintendent.

 

Knowledge of:

  • Policies, procedures and functions of student management practices
  • Applicable software and applications

 

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize and schedule priorities.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.
  • Discreetly handle confidential and politically sensitive matters.
  • Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Tactfully and courteously respond to requests and inquiries/complaints from the general public and staff.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
