How much do synthetic genomics jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for synthetic genomics in the United States is $76,893.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $53,500.00 and $85,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Synthetic Genomics Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Synthetic Genomics Scientist, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genetics, and bioinformatics, typically supported by an advanced degree in a life science field. Familiarity with genome editing tools (like CRISPR), DNA synthesis technologies, and computational analysis software is crucial. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills help drive innovation and effective teamwork in complex research environments. These skills are essential for designing, constructing, and analyzing synthetic genomes to advance scientific discovery and biotechnology applications.

What is synthetic genomics?

Synthetic genomics is a field of science focused on designing, constructing, and modifying the genetic material of organisms using synthetic biology techniques. This involves creating new DNA sequences or even entire genomes in the laboratory, enabling researchers to engineer organisms with specific traits or functions. Applications of synthetic genomics include developing new medicines, biofuels, and agricultural products, as well as advancing our understanding of genetics and life itself.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in synthetic genomics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in synthetic genomics often encounter challenges such as managing large-scale data sets, ensuring the accuracy of gene synthesis, and navigating complex regulatory requirements. Effective collaboration with bioinformaticians, molecular biologists, and regulatory experts is crucial to address these issues. Staying current with advances in automation and data analysis tools can help streamline workflows, while ongoing training and adherence to best practices ensure compliance and high-quality results.

What is the difference between Synthetic Genomics vs Molecular Biologist?

AspectSynthetic GenomicsMolecular Biologist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in genetics, biology, or related field; specialized training in genomicsBachelor's or higher in biology, genetics, or related field; often advanced degrees
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, genomics firmsAcademic labs, research institutions, biotech companies
Industry UsageBiotech, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, synthetic biologyResearch, healthcare, academia, biotech

Both roles involve genetics and laboratory work, but Synthetic Genomics focuses on designing and synthesizing genomes, often in biotech and industry settings. Molecular Biologists conduct fundamental research on genetic mechanisms, typically in academic or research institutions. While overlapping in genetics expertise, Synthetic Genomics specialists are more industry-oriented with a focus on genome synthesis, whereas Molecular Biologists often pursue broader biological research.
