What are summer camp employees called?

Summer camp employees working at swim camps are typically called camp counselors, swim instructors, or lifeguards. These roles involve supervising campers, teaching swimming skills, and ensuring safety around water, often requiring certifications like CPR and lifeguard training.

What is the difference between Swim Camps vs Swim Instructors?

Swim Camps focus on group-based, often seasonal programs designed to improve swimming skills in a camp setting, while Swim Instructors provide personalized or small group lessons throughout the year. Both roles require swim safety certifications, but Swim Instructors typically need additional certifications like lifeguarding. Understanding these differences helps individuals choose the right opportunity based on their goals and work environment preferences.

Job description

$15 - $18 per hour + Paid Training

Love working with kids? Comfortable in the water?

Watermelon Swim is hiring positive, energetic Swim Instructors to teach swim lessons and water safety in a fun, supportive environment. No prior swim instructor experience is required - we provide paid training, ongoing support, and various opportunities for career growth.

This is a part-time position with a consistent weekly schedule, including at least two weekday evenings and one weekend shift.

As a Swim Instructor, you’ll help children build confidence, safety, and lifelong swimming skills while being part of a supportive team that celebrates progress and growth.

What You’ll Do:

  • Teach swim lessons to children in small group or one-on-one settings
  • Create a fun, encouraging environment that helps swimmers succeed
  • Support children as they build confidence and water safety skills
  • Work alongside a supportive team focused on helping kids thrive in the water

Why Team Members Love Working Here:

  • Opportunities for advancement and leadership development - many of our instructors grow into Deck Supervisor or Instructor Trainer roles, and can even participate in our Slyce's Manager in Training (SMIT) program.
  • Competitive pay: $15–$18 per hour
  • Paid training — no prior instructor experience required
  • Consistent part-time schedule
  • Supportive, team-focused environment

This Role is Perfect for:

  • Students
  • Education or child development majors
  • Coaches or camp counselors
  • Parents
  • Anyone who enjoys working with children and wants a meaningful part-time job

What We’re Looking For:

  • Friendly, patient, and encouraging with children
  • Reliable and team-oriented
  • Strong communicators
  • Comfortable in the water
  • Experience with kids is helpful (babysitting, teaching, camps, coaching, parenting, etc.)

Requirements

  • At least 16 years old
  • CPR and First Aid certification (must be obtained within 45 days of hire)

Watermelon Swim’s mission is to grow a community of safer swimmers by increasing confidence and reducing risk in and around water.

If you enjoy working with kids and want a job that makes a real impact in your community, we’d love to meet you.
