Field Service Engineer: Scientific Equipment (25% Travel)

Nanoscience Instruments (NSI) sells and services sophisticated scientific instrumentation, in the field of microscopy, including scanning electron microscopes (SEM), surface science systems, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) accessories, and electro-spinning/spraying equipment.

Our products are utilized by universities, government labs, technology startups, and multinational corporations across the US and Canada. NSI enables innovation by providing complex instrumentation used in Nanotechnology R&D, advanced materials and surface sciences, material development and process applications.

We are currently seeking Field Service Engineers to perform hands‑on repairs and maintenance. We have positions in both Phoenix, AZ and Alexandria, VA.

Position Summary

Nanoscience Instruments (NSI) is seeking a hands‑on, customer‑focused Field Service Engineer to troubleshoot, perform maintenance, and repair advanced scientific instrumentation in office and at customer sites across North America. This role combines technical problem‑solving and robust customer interaction from someone willing to travel often and at times on short notice. Approximately a minimum of 25% of the position is travel related.

The ideal Service Engineer is intellectually curious, hands‑on, and a natural problem solver. Our products are multifaceted and require understanding of physics, electronics and mechanical systems. This position offers exposure to some of the world’s most advanced research facilities and cutting‑edge technologies. Direct interaction with scientists and engineers at our customer locations make excellent communication skills a must.

In-Person & 25% Travel

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct preventative maintenance of complex instruments and follow testing procedures to ensure proper operation.
  • Diagnose and repair the instruments as required.
  • As needed, conduct on‑site maintenance visits across the US and Canada (occasional weekend travel). Some training may be required at international vender locations (The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, and others).
  • Provide troubleshooting and repair support for customers via phone, email and using remote connection software.
  • Cultivate and develop positive working relationships with customers, system users, and company personnel.
  • Complete and submit detailed service reports.
  • Work with factory‑based Technical Support teams around the world, identifying and isolating unique problems.
  • Work with Nanoscience Application Scientists to learn best practices and perform basic customer trainings.
  • Other duties may include, but are not limited to, instructing customers in the operation and maintenance of equipment.
Qualifications

  • Possess or working on an engineering degree (e.g., Electrical or Mechanical) or equivalent demonstrable experience with electronic/mechanical systems in lieu of degree.
  • Experience working on complex systems or prior field service, experience
  • Literate in Windows software environments
  • Comfortable working with high value scientific equipment
  • Customer‑facing experience in a technical role is a plus
  • Be willing to travel approximately minimum of 25% of the time (Required)
