Job description

Description
Alta is looking for a Multimodal Transportation Engineer to join our growing Raleigh office design team. This production-level position is a fantastic opportunity for someone who believes in the importance of active, multimodal, and sustainable transportation and who is interested in growing their career as a transportation engineering professional. In this role, you will work on the design of a variety of sustainable transportation projects and work on projects focused on making a positive impact on communities around North Carolina and across the country. This may include concept-level design for projects like complete street reconfigurations, development of construction documents, and production of high-quality graphics.
Specific project work will involve bikeway design, complete streets, shared use path design and feasibility, streetscape design, and civil design. You will be challenged to think at various scales from the systems-level down to specific sites or intersections and learn from industry leaders in active transport. Engineers who enjoy working closely with other disciplines will appreciate our Durham team’s multi-disciplinary approach that encourages collaboration with our planners, landscape architects, graphics designers, outreach specialists, and data analysts.  If you are looking to join an innovative organization and do work that connects people to places while advancing social justice, safety, and environmental resilience, apply with Alta today!
About Alta
Alta Planning + Design is a sustainable transportation company dedicated to creating active, healthy communities through planning, landscape architecture, engineering, and education/encouragement programs. Alta was founded in 1996 when communities were calling for safer streets for people walking and bicycling as the non-motorized transportation movement developed into a profession in the United States. We pioneered the field of active transportation, evolving our planning and design work into a visionary global practice that empowers people to live active, healthy lives and gets them to where they need to go.
Our core values and work bring about positive change by creating places that are geared toward moving people rather than cars, connecting community members to daily needs and human experience, and empowering every person to live an active healthy life. As a global leader in mobility innovation for over 27 years with over 200 staff, we are dedicated to connecting people to places by working across disciplines and scale to address social justice, safety, and environmental resilience.

Day to Day
You will be a part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for leading and delivering a wide range of multimodal projects ranging from complete streets, complex bikeway design, complete streets, trails, and quick-build intersections. You will be responsible for a variety of design tasks including geometric layout, grading, signing and striping, storm drainage, green infrastructure, traffic control plans, construction staging, details, and engineer’s estimates for large- and small-scale bicycle and pedestrian improvement projects, complete streets, and multimodal projects. You will progressively develop abilities in solving complex transportation problems with creative solutions.

From time to time, you may participate in and lead some site visits to project sites to investigate existing conditions and observe construction activities.  You will lead some project tasks and assist in creating project documents to prepare a complete, bid-ready Plans, Specification, and Estimate package. You may be designated as the project design lead or support a project design lead and/or project manager in client coordination, sub-consultant coordination, and document review. You will participate in and be encouraged to lead some project coordination meetings with clients (both internal and external).
Some support may be requested when pursuing projects including writing the scope of work, preparing fee estimates, preparing technical graphics and concepts, reviewing proposals for other technical content, and coordinating with internal staff.

You will also support a variety of internal and external clients on creating conceptual designs and plans for grant applications, feasibility studies, corridor studies, and other planning documents. Because of our collaborative approach, you will get an opportunity to connect with Alta's engineers and planners throughout the US and Canada, and work on projects across North America.
