What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sustainable materials engineer?

To thrive as a Sustainable Materials Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, environmental engineering, and sustainability principles, typically with a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with life cycle assessment (LCA) software, CAD tools, and certifications like LEED or ISO 14001 is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and innovate eco-friendly solutions. These skills ensure the development of sustainable materials and processes that meet both technical and environmental standards.

How does a sustainable materials engineer typically collaborate with product development teams?

Sustainable Materials Engineers work closely with product designers, manufacturing engineers, and procurement teams to ensure that materials selected for new products meet both performance and sustainability standards. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to review design concepts, offer guidance on eco-friendly alternatives, and help assess the life cycle impacts of material choices. This collaborative approach ensures that sustainability considerations are integrated early and effectively into the product development process.

What is the difference between Sustainable Materials Engineer vs Materials Scientist?

AspectSustainable Materials EngineerMaterials Scientist

Job description

Novelis is one of the world leaders in aluminum recycling and rolling and a leading sustainable aluminum solutions provider. Driven by our purpose of shaping a sustainable world together, we work alongside our customers to provide innovative solutions to the aerospace, automotive, beverage packaging and specialty markets. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, Novelis has approximately 13,000 employees in 32 operating facilities on 4 continents.

The Novelis Kennesaw team is seeking a Materials Engineer. This role reports to the Senior Manager Operations and Customer Plant Support. The ideal candidate will be responsible for working in project teams to develop superior rolled aluminum products for automotive/CAN/specialty applications. Working closely with colleagues in research and in manufacturing, the jobholder will strive to turn innovative science and technology into robust, working solutions. This would involve leading/performing routine and, at times, non-routine testing and characterization relevant to aluminum products and processes. The role may have ownership of some portion of a project or program of tests in the lab, or responsibility of pieces of equipment for analysis, testing, or processing. There will be opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in Novelis’ plants and regional technology centers around the globe, and to support customers. The role provides potential for growth towards technical and project leadership, and a real chance to play an important part in the future success of Novelis’ global automotive/CAN/specialty businesses.

Responsibilities:
  • Balance priorities across multiple projects or work streams to meet assigned project commitments, timelines and deliverables
  • Plan, organize, complete and document results of experiments, plant trials and product performance investigations conducted for Novelis, customers, and suppliers; responsible for reliability and accuracy of data and preliminary analysis of results
  • May work individually or as a part of a team to perform routine and non-routine assigned tasks, and may coordinate the efforts of others to achieve common goals
  • Propose, justify and lead projects for a site or segments of larger projects
  • Assist with feasibility studies to analyse the commercial and technical viability of new products and processes
  • Assist with developing tests and testing regimes to demonstrate products are fit for purpose
  • Ability to independently isolate a problem and draw upon knowledge and experience to design an appropriate, well-controlled experiment to identify cause and possible solutions
  • Drive process improvements within a department or a location; may be responsible for maintenance of critical equipment or process
  • Clearly communicate technical information and results effectively to internal customers
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with work group and other internal functional areas.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science Metallurgical, or Mechanical Engineering with typically 1 to 2 years of experience in a manufacturing or R&D environment
  • Specific experience related to aluminum products would be a distinct advantage, although applicants with relevant experience in steels or other metals would also be considered
  • Ability to work with limited supervision from supervisor, project leader or senior technical staff
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize responsibility; must be able to manage multiple tasks without compromising the quality of work and data
  • An interest in critical thinking, problem solving and attention to details; strong communication and presentation skills for reporting to internal collaborators
  • Strong teammate with ability to interact with different levels of the organization
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of one or more metallurgical processes such as casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, annealing, laboratory heat treatments, materials characterization techniques, etc.
  • Experience with project management including tools/principles
  • Possess advanced computer skills to collect, store and analyze data and image
