Surge Protection information

What is the difference between Surge Protection vs Electrician?

AspectSurge ProtectionElectrician
CredentialsTypically no formal certification required, but specialized training availableLicensed and certified electricians
Work EnvironmentResidential, commercial, and industrial settings focusing on electrical systems and devicesConstruction sites, maintenance, installations, troubleshooting
Industry UsageDesign and installation of surge protection devices and systemsElectrical wiring, repairs, and system upgrades

Surge Protection specialists focus on safeguarding electrical systems from voltage spikes, often working with specific devices and systems. Electricians have broader electrical skills, including wiring, repairs, and installations. While surge protection is a specialized area, electricians may install surge protection devices as part of their services. Both roles are essential in maintaining electrical safety and functionality.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and troubleshoot AC to DC power supply circuits.
  • Develop isolated and non-isolated power converter designs including flyback, buck, boost, and other applicable switching power supply topologies. Perform transformer and inductor design, selection, specification review, and validation for switching power supply applications.
  • Analyze power supply performance including efficiency, thermal performance, load regulation, line regulation, transient response, ripple, noise, startup behavior, and fault protection.
  • Support EMI/EMC troubleshooting and mitigation for switch-mode power supplies.
  • Conduct design verification testing for AC/DC power supplies, including abnormal condition testing, overload, short-circuit, surge, ESD, thermal rise, and reliability testing.
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate critical power supply components.
  • Design analog and circuits, switch-mode converters, amplifiers, sensing circuits, and protection circuits.
  • Design digital, microprocessor-based circuits with understanding of the firmware requirements
  • Test prototypes and integrated systems as a part of development process
  • Develop and institute concepts and solutions to design and application problems
