What is a surface miner?

A Surface Miner operates heavy machinery to extract minerals, coal, or other materials from open-pit mines or quarries. They use equipment like bulldozers, excavators, and drills to strip away rock and soil, ensuring safe and efficient resource extraction. Surface Miners must follow strict safety regulations and environmental guidelines while working in various weather conditions. The job requires physical stamina, technical skills, and knowledge of mining operations.

What are the typical working conditions and shifts for a surface miner?

Surface Miners usually work outdoors in a physically demanding environment, exposed to varying weather conditions and loud machinery. Shifts can be long, often spanning 8 to 12 hours, with work schedules that may include nights, weekends, or rotating shifts to meet operational needs. Teamwork is essential, as miners regularly coordinate with equipment operators, supervisors, and safety personnel to ensure smooth operations. Proper protective gear and adherence to strict safety guidelines are required on-site, and many employers offer ongoing training to help workers advance their skills. This work structure supports both safe practices and long-term career growth in the mining industry.

How do you become a surface miner?

To become a surface miner, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with specialized training or certification in mining operations. Gaining experience with heavy machinery such as continuous miners and understanding safety protocols are essential, and some positions may require a valid driver's license and physical fitness for demanding outdoor work.

How much do surface miners make?

Surface miners typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the mining operations. Skilled operators with certifications and experience in heavy machinery may earn higher wages, often with opportunities for overtime and shift differentials.

What does a surface miner do?

A surface miner operates specialized equipment to remove minerals or rocks from the earth's surface, often replacing traditional blasting methods. They work in open-pit environments, using heavy machinery and may need certifications in equipment operation and safety protocols. The role involves physical labor, attention to safety, and knowledge of geology and mining procedures.

The ideal candidate is comfortable talking with people from all backgrounds, understands the importance of urgency in staffing, and is willing to actively search for candidates rather than simply waiting for applications to come in.

  • Conduct initial phone screenings and candidate interviews.
  • Communicate job expectations, schedules, pay information, work environments, and hiring requirements to applicants.
  • Coordinate candidates through the pre-employment process, including interviews, drug screenings, background checks, physicals, training, and required documentation.
  • Maintain regular communication with candidates throughout the hiring process.
  • Participate in job fairs, hiring events, community events, and recruiting campaigns.
  • Maintain accurate candidate records and recruiting activity.
  • Work closely with JENNMAR Services management, HR, safety personnel, and customer representatives to understand current workforce needs.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Previous recruiting, staffing, HR, sales, customer service, or workforce-development experience.
  • Experience recruiting industrial, manufacturing, construction, skilled-trades, or mining employees is strongly preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable making a high volume of phone calls and communicating with candidates through phone, text, email, and social media.
  • Ability to speak confidently with both job seekers and company representatives.
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple open positions and candidates simultaneously.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where hiring needs can change quickly.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn applicant tracking and recruiting systems.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing to a team environment.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys talking to people and isn't afraid to pick up the phone.

You should be competitive, persistent, organized, and comfortable working toward measurable recruiting goals.

Most importantly, we want someone who understands that recruiting is about building relationships. The best candidate today may not be available for the position we have open—but they may be exactly who we need three months from now.

Our goal is to continually build a network of qualified industrial and mining professionals who know and trust JENNMAR Services.
