What is a support engineer?

Support Engineers are professionals who assist customers or internal users in resolving technical issues related to software, hardware, or IT systems. They diagnose problems, provide solutions, and ensure that technology products and services run smoothly. Support Engineers often use troubleshooting tools and documentation to address user concerns, and they may escalate complex issues to higher-level technical teams. Their goal is to deliver excellent customer service and maintain system reliability. They work in various industries, including IT, telecommunications, and software companies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a support engineer?

To thrive as a Support Engineer, you need strong problem-solving abilities, technical knowledge of software and hardware, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ticketing systems, remote diagnostic tools, and certifications like CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) are typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and a customer-focused attitude help build trust and effectively resolve user issues. These skills are crucial for delivering timely technical support, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining operational efficiency.

How does a support engineer typically collaborate with other departments to resolve complex customer issues?

Support Engineers frequently work closely with product development, quality assurance, and operations teams to address complex technical challenges faced by customers. When an issue extends beyond standard troubleshooting, they escalate cases internally, providing detailed diagnostics and customer context to ensure an efficient resolution. This cross-functional collaboration not only helps resolve customer issues faster but also contributes to product improvements and knowledge sharing across teams. Being proactive and clear in communication is key to successful interdepartmental collaboration in this role.

Product Support Engineer
Eagan, MN | $30 - 55/hr | Contract to Hire
Konik is partnering with a local engineering firm seeking to add a Product Support Engineer to join their team at an entry, senior or principal level. As a Product Support Engineer, you'll play a key role in making sure complex products and systems for the defense industry remain safe, reliable, maintainable, and cost-effective throughout their entire lifecycle. You'll influence design decisions, define maintenance strategies, and manage long-term risks like obsolescence—all while ensuring technical data and documentation are accurate, clear, and user-friendly.
This is a collaborative role where you'll work closely with engineers, technical writers, and program stakeholders to bridge the gap between design, sustainment, and the end user. If you are a mechanically inclined individual who enjoys working in an analytical, cross-functional setting supporting complex electromechanical products, you are encouraged to apply!
Product Support Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Perform logistics analyses to define spares, provisioning, and maintenance strategies.
  • Influence system and component design for maintainability, reliability, and lifecycle cost efficiency.
  • Develop, review, and maintain CDRLs, provisioning files, and logistics support documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, publications, and cross-functional teams to ensure data integrity.
  • Monitor and address obsolescence risks (DMSMS) throughout program lifecycles.
  • Validate technical publications and Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM) for accuracy and usability.
  • Provide input for supportability, reliability, and safety analyses (LORA, FMECA, MTBF, MTTR, RAM).
  • Prepare and deliver sustainment metrics, dashboards, and lifecycle sustainment plans.
  • Support technical writers and artists in creating accurate maintenance manuals.
  • Participate in provisioning conferences, RCM reviews, and customer sustainment discussions.

Product Support Engineer
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in Engineering, Physics, or related technical field.
  • Entry-level candidates with an engineering background will be considered; 3-7 years of experience for senior level; 8-12+ years of experience for principal level.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data analysis skills; ideal prospects will have a strong mechanical inclination.
  • Experience with technical documentation review, provisioning data, sustainment planning, and developing procedures in secure settings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and collaboration platforms (SharePoint, Teams).
  • Ideal candidate will have prior experience in a technical customer-facing role.
  • U.S. Person status required (ITAR compliance required).
  • Defense, aerospace, or related industry experience is a plus.

Benefits:

  • Health & Dental Insurance
  • Minnesota Earned Sick & Safe Time
  • Overtime Eligibility
  • Weekly paychecks
