Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo is seeking an Electronics Technical Associate to join our technical support team.This is a service-oriented staff position responsible for providing electronic repair, maintenance, and technical support within the department's Electronics Repair Shop. The Electronics Technical Associate reports directly to the Laboratory Facilities Manager, who oversees the shop's daily operations and service priorities.
This hands-on, detail-driven role is ideal for individuals with strong experience in electronics repair-particularly those confident in soldering, diagnosing circuit-level issues, and using diagnostic tools such as voltmeters and oscilloscopes.
The department supports a broad array of scientific instrumentation used in teaching and research. From spectrometers and chromatographs to custom-built devices, the work is varied, meaningful, and closely connected to scientific discovery. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to apply technical expertise in a collaborative academic environment.
As the Electronics Technical Associate, you will serve as a key resource for maintaining, repairing, and enhancing the department's electronic infrastructure. You will work closely with faculty, staff, and students to troubleshoot equipment, support research activities, and contribute to the design and fabrication of specialized instrumentation. This position is well suited for adaptable, curious individuals who enjoy problem-solving, learning by doing, and supporting a diverse scientific community.
Principal responsibilities/duties include:
  • Perform hands-on diagnostic assessments and repairs on a wide range of electronic instrumentation, including spectrometers, chromatographic systems, balances, pH meters, and related laboratory equipment
  • Troubleshoot and repair RF, high-voltage, analog, and digital circuits using diagnostic tools such as digital multimeters and oscilloscopes
  • Confidently solder and replace on-board components, including through-hole and surface-mount devices, as part of routine and advanced repairs
  • Interface laboratory instrumentation with computers and software, ensuring proper communication, integration, and functionality
  • Collaborate with faculty and researchers to design and fabricate specialized equipment, including simple circuit designs, test fixtures, and prototypes
  • Manage the Electronics Shop workflow, including work orders, inventory control, equipment maintenance, and technical documentation
  • Provide electronics repair services and technical expertise to other departments as needed
  • Supervise and mentor student workers or interns, promoting safe, effective, and professional technical practices
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on electrical circuitry, instrumentation, and safety within the department
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive work environment while contributing positively to a collaborative team culture.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field, and 2 years of experience. A combination of degree, certification and experience will be considered in lieu of the degree requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience performing electronics repair at the component and circuit level, including troubleshooting analog and digital systems.
  • Strong soldering skills, including the replacement of both through-hole and surface-mount components.
  • Proficiency with standard electronic diagnostic equipment, including digital multimeters, signal generators, and oscilloscopes.
  • Working knowledge of RF and high-voltage circuitry, with the ability to diagnose and repair systems safely.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently on complex technical issues.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Demonstrated commitment to electrical safety standards and best practices in a laboratory environment.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience interfacing electronic instrumentation with computers and software systems.
  • Experience supporting scientific or laboratory instrumentation in an academic or research setting.
  • Familiarity with basic PCB layout, circuit prototyping, or test circuit design.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition software such as LabVIEW.
  • Familiarity with UL and electrical safety standards.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring student employees or junior technicians.
  • Interest in learning new technologies and adapting to evolving research and instructional needs.
