What is a supplemental instruction leader?

Supplemental Instruction Leaders are trained students who facilitate group study sessions for challenging courses. They attend the class they support, prepare collaborative learning activities, and help students develop effective study strategies. Their goal is to improve student understanding, engagement, and academic performance in difficult subjects. Supplemental Instruction Leaders do not re-lecture or provide answers, but instead guide participants to actively discuss and solve course material together.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a supplemental instruction leader?

To thrive as a Supplemental Instruction Leader, you need strong subject matter expertise, academic achievement in the relevant course, and effective facilitation skills. Familiarity with educational technology platforms, collaborative learning tools, and campus learning management systems is typically required. Outstanding communication, active listening, and the ability to foster an inclusive learning environment are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure you can guide peer learning sessions effectively, boost student engagement, and support academic success.

What are common challenges supplemental instruction leaders face when facilitating group study sessions?

Supplemental Instruction Leaders often encounter challenges such as encouraging participation from all students, managing group dynamics, and ensuring sessions stay focused on collaborative learning rather than becoming mini-lectures. It can also be tricky to adapt to varying levels of student preparedness and to foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable asking questions. Developing strong facilitation and communication skills is key to overcoming these challenges and creating a productive, supportive learning space.
