What is a superconducting job?

Superconducting jobs typically refer to roles that work with materials or systems exhibiting superconductivity, which is the property of zero electrical resistance at very low temperatures. These jobs can be found in research, engineering, and manufacturing sectors, focusing on developing superconducting materials, designing superconducting magnets, or building applications like MRI machines and quantum computers. Professionals in this field may have backgrounds in physics, materials science, or electrical engineering. Their work often involves experimental research, product development, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to advance superconducting technologies.

What are the typical team dynamics and collaboration opportunities for professionals working in superconducting research or engineering roles?

Professionals in superconducting roles often work within multidisciplinary teams that include physicists, materials scientists, engineers, and technicians. Collaboration is key, as projects typically involve integrating theoretical research with practical applications, such as developing advanced magnets or quantum devices. Regular meetings, joint problem-solving sessions, and cross-functional project planning are common, fostering a highly collaborative and innovative environment. Team members are encouraged to share findings, troubleshoot experimental issues together, and contribute to publications or patents, making communication and teamwork essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a superconducting engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Superconducting Engineer, you need a solid background in physics, materials science, and electrical engineering, often supported by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with cryogenic systems, electromagnetic simulation software, and laboratory instrumentation is typical, along with relevant certifications or research experience. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills help you excel in collaborative research and problem-solving environments. These competencies are vital for advancing superconducting technologies and ensuring precise, innovative solutions in research or industrial applications.

What is the difference between Superconducting vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectSuperconductingElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in physics, materials science, or related fields; specialized knowledge in superconductivityBachelor's or higher in electrical engineering; professional engineering license often preferred
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, advanced materials facilities, academia, specialized industriesManufacturing plants, power systems, electronics design, corporate offices
Industry UsageResearch institutions, quantum computing, energy transmission, scientific researchPower generation, electronics, telecommunications, automation

Superconducting professionals focus on materials and systems that exhibit zero electrical resistance at low temperatures, often working in research or specialized industries. Electrical engineers have a broader scope, designing and maintaining electrical systems across various sectors. While both roles require a strong technical background, superconducting roles are more specialized and research-oriented, whereas electrical engineering is more application-driven and industry-wide.

Job description

Manufacturing Operations Manager - AMPeers

Location: Houston, TX, on-site

Department: Engineering

Salary: Based on experience

Background & Job Description

Discovered at the University of Houston in 1987, high temperature superconductors (HTS) deliver dramatically higher current densities than copper and aluminum with zero resistance.

AMPeers is a technology startup out of Houston, TX, developing next-generation HTS tapes and symmetric tape round (STAR®) superconducting wires. In collaboration with the University of Houston, our technology enables the widespread adoption of superconductors in fusion magnets, power transmission, and next-generation electric machines.

As we transition from pilot-scale production to commercial manufacturing, we are building out our first dedicated production facility in Houston. The Manufacturing Operations Manager will own the commissioning of that facility and manage day-to-day operations.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead facility commissioning including infrastructure set up, equipment installation, utility coordination, and contractor management

  • Develop SOPs, EHS protocols, and quality systems from the ground up for an advanced materials manufacturing environment

  • Manage chemical handling procedures for process gases and solvents in compliance with OSHA and local regulations

  • Coordinate with the equipment engineering team on tool qualification, preventive maintenance, and uptime targets

  • Manage facility vendors and consumables suppliers

  • Build and develop the operations team as headcount scales

Requirements
  • Comfort standing up systems and processes without a template

  • Direct experience in a capital-equipment-intensive process manufacturing environment (semiconductor, thin film, roll-to-roll, battery, solar, or specialty materials)

  • Experience managing facility buildouts, equipment commissioning, or contractor coordination

  • 5+ years in manufacturing operations, process engineering, or plant management

Preferred Requirements
  • Hands-on familiarity with vacuum systems or deposition tools (CVD, PVD, ALD, or similar)

  • Experience writing SOPs and implementing safety or quality programs

  • Background in cryogenic, high-vacuum, or thin film materials environments

  • Prior experience at an early-stage or scaling manufacturing operation

What We Offer
  • Medical coverage (HMO and PPO plan options)

  • Dental coverage with 100% no-deductible preventive care

  • Vision coverage

  • Company-paid basic life and AD&D insurance

  • 401(k) plan with company contribution

AMPeers is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds.
