POSITION OVERVIEWThe Assistant School Director partners with the School Director to ensure highquality, compliant, and missionaligned operations of Sunbeam Family Services’ Early Childhood Services (ECS) programs, including Early Head Start and Head Start. The role provides instructional leadership, staff supervision, and operational support to ensure safe, developmentally appropriate, and effective early learning services for children and families.Working collaboratively with coordinators, teaching staff, and other Sunbeam departments, the Assistant School Director supports compliance monitoring, data reporting, program implementation, and administrative and fiscal processes. The Assistant School Director also actively supports classroom operations by modeling best practices, providing direct classroom instruction and supervision as needed, and ensuring continuity of care and required stafftochild ratios.In alignment with Sunbeam’s mission, the Assistant School Director demonstrates cultural humility, builds strong relationships with staff and families, and consistently upholds Sunbeam’s core values and standards of excellence while serving children and families from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS                                                        

• Promote and contribute to a work environment that reflects cultural humility, respect, and responsiveness, supporting staff in effectively engaging with children and families from varied cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. .
• Assist the School Director in the overall operation and maintenance of a safe, clean, healthy, and productive learning environment, including both indoor and outdoor facilities.
• Demonstrate capacity for providing developmentally appropriate and evidence-based practice, for exemplifying the values expected within the program, and for promoting the mission of the organization.
• Provide leadership and supervision to center staff, including teaching staff, by setting performance expectations, monitoring progress, providing coaching and feedback, and supporting professional growth and accountability. Facilitate and support professional development, training, and skill building activities for assigned staff, including modeling developmentally appropriate and evidence-based instructional practices.
• Conduct regular team meetings to review progress, address challenges, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Ensure compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS), National Accreditations, federal and state regulations, and Oklahoma DHS Child Care Licensing requirements, including maintaining accurate and up to date records and documentation.
• Provide classroom supervision and teaching as needed to maintain continuity of care, required stafftochild ratios, and safe, clean, and effective classroom operations during staffing or programmatic needs
• Assist with classroom coverage as needed to support daily operations, staffing needs, and program continuity. Assist School Director in maintaining effective record keeping and reporting systems to ensure timely and accurate information, completion of required reports, follow-up actions, and monitoring activities.
• Actively participate in parent meetings, group meetings, community collaborations, and partnerships to advocate for children and families and support meaningful family engagement.
• Collaborate with program staff, state agencies, and community partners to support effective transition planning and communication for children and families.
• Promote, encourage, and model leadership, professionalism, ethical conduct, and accountability with children, families, coworkers, and community partners.
• Perform all duties and attend required training related to supervisor role.
• Travel locally as required to fulfill job responsibilities and attend meetings, trainings, or program activities
• Perform other appropriate and related responsibilities as assigned by supervisor, Chief Program Officer, or Chief Executive Officer.   

JOB QUALIFICATIONS           The requirements listed in this job description are the minimum levels of knowledge, skills, or abilities.

Minimally Required

Preferred

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Child Development (CD), Healt or related degree as approved by Sunbeam.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in unrelated field plus 36 college credit hours in ECE, CD, or related degree as approved by Sunbeam.

Master’s degree  in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Health or related degree

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of experience providing staff supervision

Experience with staff supervision in an early childhood or child development setting.

Caring and compassionate attitude when interacting with and caring for children and families.

Knowledge and understanding of Head Start Performance Standards and state and child care licensing requirements (local and state).

Excellent command of English language and grammar, both verbal and written

Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft applications and the ability to master other software as needed

Demonstrated, well-developed leadership abilities of problem-solving, communication, adaptability, and good judgment.

Good organizational and time management skills.

Local travel required and must have valid Oklahoma driver’s license and insurance as required by the position.

Knowledge and understanding of Child Plus

Knowledge and understanding of NAEYC

Bilingual Spanish/English speaking ability to interact with children and families from multilingual homes.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently communicate with staff and others, and must be able to exchange accurate information when doing so. The employee must be able to interact closely and safely with small children in various positions and environments, including communicating verbally with children and performing tasks such as feeding children, changing diapers, lifting children from floor or other surfaces, and assisting with classroom activities.

Employee must also be able to move throughout classroom and office spaces, operate and use a computer and other office equipment, and occasionally access file cabinets, equipment, and materials. The employee must be able to detect, discern, observe, inspect, and compare information and conditions relevant to child safety and program operations. The employee may occasionally must be able to move or lift up to 50 pounds. 

Work Environment

The employee will work in a school environment, may work in close quarters with other staff and small children.  The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to loud; frequent chaotic situations will occur, characteristic to working with children ages 0 – 5 years.  Employee must expect exposure to strong odors such as soiled diapers and clothes, and poor hygiene. May come into contact with childhood diseases and blood on occasion.
