What are summer sales interns?

Summer sales interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily during the summer months to gain hands-on experience in sales. They typically assist sales teams with prospecting, customer outreach, administrative tasks, and sometimes shadow sales meetings or calls. The goal of a summer sales internship is to develop skills in communication, negotiation, and sales processes, while providing insight into a potential sales career. These positions are usually paid or offer academic credit, and can serve as a stepping stone to full-time sales roles after graduation.

What types of support and training can a Summer Sales Intern expect during their internship?

As a Summer Sales Intern, you can typically expect comprehensive onboarding sessions, ongoing mentorship from experienced sales professionals, and access to product or service training resources. Many organizations provide regular team meetings, role-playing exercises, and constructive feedback to help interns develop their communication and sales techniques. Interns often work closely with account executives or sales managers, gaining hands-on experience and building valuable relationships that can support long-term career growth in sales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Summer Sales Intern, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Summer Sales Intern, you need strong interpersonal skills, a basic understanding of sales principles, and often current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and office productivity tools like Microsoft Excel or Salesforce is commonly expected. Initiative, adaptability, and effective communication help interns build rapport with customers and contribute to team goals. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to learn quickly, engage potential clients, and support overall sales objectives in a fast-paced environment.

What is the difference between Summer Sales Intern vs Sales Associate?

AspectSummer Sales InternSales Associate
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or college student, some sales or marketing courseworkHigh school diploma; experience varies
Work EnvironmentTemporary, internship setting, often in retail or corporate salesFull-time or part-time retail or direct sales environment
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for training and talent pipeline, common in retail and corporate sectorsCommon in retail stores, tele-sales, and direct customer interaction roles

In summary, a Summer Sales Intern typically participates in a temporary internship focused on learning sales skills, often for students or those new to the industry. A Sales Associate is a more permanent role involving direct customer sales and service. While both roles involve sales activities, the internship emphasizes training and development, whereas the associate role centers on ongoing sales performance.

Summer Sales Intern

Our not-so-secret sauce.

Award-winning, inclusive, top workplace culture doesn't happen overnight. It's a result of hard work by extraordinary people. More than 15,000 of the industry's brightest talent drive our efforts to deliver purposeful work and meaningful impact every day. Learn more about what makes us different and how you can thrive as a sales intern at MMA.

Marsh McLennan Agency (MMA) provides business insurance, employee health & benefits, retirement, and private client insurance solutions to organizations and individuals seeking limitless possibilities. With 300 offices across North America, we combine the personalized service model of a local consultant with the global resources of the world's leading professional services firm, Marsh McLennan (NYSE: MMC).

A day in the life.

As our summer intern on the sales team, you'll work together with your intern class on projects, gain coverage knowledge in both property & casualty and group benefits insurance and learn about our agency in an immersive, collaborative environment. You will spend time with and seek additional professional guidance from your assigned mentor, an experienced insurance sales executive, to sharpen your networking skills and to have as additional resource to you! At the end of your 8-week internship, you will work through a simulated full-cycle sales process and get to showcase what you have learned in a mock final presentation to the "potential buyers", sales leadership and the executive team.

Our future colleague.

We'd love to meet you if your professional track record includes these skills:

  • Risk management and insurance or sales major, preferably entering their senior year

These additional qualifications are a plus, but not required to apply:

  • Previous insurance or sales focused internship

We know there are excellent candidates who might not check all of these boxes. Don't be shy. If you're close, we'd be very interested in meeting you.

Who you are is who we are.

We embrace a culture that celebrates and promotes the many backgrounds, heritages and perspectives of our colleagues and clients. We are always seeking those with ethics, talent, and ambition who are interested in joining our client-focused teams.
