Job description

Job Summary
Instruct and share knowledge of nutrition (label reading) and teach basic skills of kitchen safety, cleanliness, and food preparation to 6th through 12th grade students with varying skill levels.
Summer EXCEL ¿ brief summary and background:
Milwaukee Recreation's Summer EXCEL (Exciting Camps for Enrichment and Learning) program provides enriching learning experiences for youth during the summer. Summer EXCEL programs typically take place at locations that operate CLC and Safe Place summer programs or at alternate facilities. The focus of MPS Summer EXCEL is to provide youth with a safe space for youth to participate in academic, recreation enrichment and youth development opportunities
During the summer, Summer Recreation Programs (Summer CLCs and Safe Places) at MPS elementary and K-8 schools operate from Monday through Friday from 7:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and middle/high school locations operate from 11:00a.m.-6:00p.m. Each summer program location serves an average of 55 to 100 or more participants daily. At elementary and K-8 locations, academic enrichment programming typically occurs in the morning before lunch. Summer Recreation Programs at MPS CLCs and Safe Places also provide daily meals and/or snacks.
Position Summary
Summer EXCEL Culinary Arts Instructor will provide culinary arts camps at MPS School. This a part-time, summer program-only position. The Summer EXCEL Culinary Arts Instructor is expected to work 16 to 18 hours per week (3.5-4.5 hours per day, 4 days per week), Monday through Thursday during summer program academic enrichment programming from June 29th ¿ July 23rd, 2025
GOALS for Instruction Include:
Giving students a better understanding of NUTRITION and COOKING for themselves. A daily lesson plan will be taught. Also, each group will work independently with the instructor when the prep and cooking start.
  1. The student will learn more about food products (expiration dates), what the products really contain, hygiene and safety in the kitchen and which foods are nutritious and also essential for you to be healthy as an adult.
  2. The student will be taught how to make a variety of basic food meal items.
  3. Each day the student may be given a short Quiz (5 Basic Questions) -- on what they learn each day regarding Food, Nutrition and Cooking.
  4. These classes are ¿Hands On¿ ¿ so students will actually prep and cook the food.

Students will be provided with the following materials for class:
  1. Individual Folder/Notebook for their classroom notes (provided).
  2. Each student will have cooking aprons provided for them each day while they are working with food along with plastic food gloves (provided).
  3. All cooking materials and the food that will be prepared will be provided.

Supervision Required
Reports to the Recreation Supervisor of the Summer EXCEL Camps
Job Requirements
  • 21 years of age or older.
  • Instructor of Culinary Arts Programming.
  • At least 2 years of teaching, cooking and working with students of all ages.
  • Able to meet all scheduling needs of the required position.

Preferred Experience
  • Previous work experience in a school setting with a diverse population.
  • Experience teaching, organizing, and leading.
  • CPR/First Aid training.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Ability to develop lesson plans.
  • Ability and willingness to communicate and engage students.
  • Ability to supervise and manage groups of students.
  • Enjoys working with students of all ages.

Pay, Benefits, and Work Schedule
This a part-time, summer program only position. EXCEL Culinary Arts Instructor is expected to work from 12:00p.m/1:00p.m-3:00p.m./4:00p.m.., four days per week, Monday through Thursday, as part the Summer EXCEL program from June 29 th - July 23 rd . Work schedule includes prep and instruction hours plus four additional hours weekly for program supply acquisition
