Job description

THIS IS A SEASONAL POSITION

Parks & Recreation

Summer Program Counselor [Lake Allatoona]

Posting Expires: Open Until Filled 

Salary: $16.00

Purpose of Classification: 

This is a seasonal position, assisting in the supervision, of 8-10 campers at the Lake Allatoona Camp Site for the Camp Best Friends Program.  The counselors will maintain direct communication with the Camp Director & Outdoor Program Coordinator and are responsible for safety and supervision of their groups. This position will live onsite Monday night through Friday morning.  Room and board is provided.
 

Minimum Qualifications: 
   High School Diploma or GED. 
   One year of previous experience leading outdoor program activities.
  Must pass background check for criminal and child protective findings. 
   Must pass a drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:
   Current CPR/First Aid or Wilderness First Aid or First Responder.
   Completion of or working toward a degree in parks, recreation, outdoor leadership, biology, or other related areas.
   Experience working with youth in a camp and/or school setting.
   Knowledge of and experience with tree, plant, and wildlife identification.

Additional Information: 
   City of Atlanta required training June 1st- June 5th, 2026.
   Allatoona Campground specific site training and Outdoor Activity Training 
   Summer staff will be required to work a 10 - hour shift Monday - Friday from June 8th - July 24th, 2026.  Vacation requests during this time will not be approved.
   All summer staff must be actively involved in the lake with campers during swim times and wear a bathing suit (one-piece for females, swimming trunks with lining for males). Staff is not required to know how to swim or teach swim lessons.

Essential duties and responsibilities: The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned. 


    Supervision of 8-10 campers between the ages of 8-12 years old
    Ensure campers are meeting their schedule including: Wake up, meals, activities, and bed times.
    Ensure safe participation in recreational activities such as kayaking, fishing, orienteering, hiking, swimming, teambuilding, nature walks, wildlife education, and other outdoor sports and activities.
    Ensure all campers are meeting standards for clean-up after meals, activities and sleep. 
    Assist Camp Director, Outdoor Program Coordinator, Lead Instructor, and all co-workers in technical duties related to program implementation.
    Ensure all registered patrons are picked up and dropped off at assigned locations and signed out to the proper parents at the beginning and end of camping week.
    Assist with breakfast and luggage organization at pick up site (Mondays)
    Assist with camp operations at drop off site (Fridays)
    Assist in gathering documents, equipment, and transportation related to program.
    Provide safety and preparation instructions to participants before engaging in activity.
    Provide reports as needed on evaluations, performance, and recommendations.
    Maintain current certifications as related to program.
    Maintain and keep all equipment organized.
    Maintain supply inventory and report needed to Camp Director and Outdoor Program Coordinator.
    Maintain reports and forms pertinent to your group - health, injury, and infraction. 
    Communicate professionally with parents, staff, and participants.
    Some custodial and dining hall cleaning duties
