A Summer Librarian is a temporary position, usually in a public or academic library, that helps support library services during the summer months. Responsibilities may include assisting patrons, organizing events, managing book circulation, and helping with research inquiries. This role is ideal for students, educators, or librarians seeking seasonal work. It often involves promoting summer reading programs and engaging the community in literacy activities.

What are the primary responsibilities of a summer librarian during the summer months?

As a Summer Librarian, your main responsibilities often include assisting patrons with reference questions, managing the circulation desk, organizing and running summer reading programs, and shelving or cataloging library materials. You may also help coordinate community events or workshops tailored to children and teens who visit more frequently during summer break. Strong collaboration with other library staff and volunteers is typical, as the summer period can bring increased activity and special programming. These skills ensure efficient library operations, positive patron interactions, and the ability to support seasonal programs and shifting workflows during busy summer months.

Are summer librarians still in demand?

These positions often require strong organizational skills and knowledge of library management tools, and demand can vary based on community needs and funding availability.

Can you become a summer librarian with no experience?

Summer librarian positions often do not require prior experience, especially for entry-level roles aimed at students or recent graduates. Relevant skills include customer service, organization, and familiarity with library systems, and some positions may require a background check or training provided by the employer.

Who We Are
At Code Ninjas, kids ages 7-14 learn to code by building video games they love - and have a blast doing it! Our Create program runs year-round, while our Camps, Pop-Up Events, Academies, and Clubs bring coding to schools, libraries, and community centers. We're not just teaching code - we're creating confident problem-solvers and future innovators.
The Role - Be the Hero in the Dojo!
As a Code Ninjas Sensei, you'll guide small groups of young ninjas (4-8 kids) through our gamified curriculum (MakeCode, JavaScript, Roblox, Minecraft, Unity, and more). You'll celebrate every "level-up," turn frustration into breakthroughs, and watch kids beam with pride when their game finally works.
What You'll Do Every Shift
- Lead Create sessions, Academies and Clubs in our high-energy dojo
- Run half-day/full-day camps during school breaks and summer
- Help ninjas debug code, level up their projects, and earn belts in our proprietary curriculum
- Create a safe, encouraging, hype-filled atmosphere where every kid feels like a rockstar
- Collaborate with Center staff to set up/tidy dojo, track progress, and communicate with parents
You're a Perfect Fit If You
- Love kids and genuinely enjoy seeing them succeed
- Have experience with block-based or text-based coding (Scratch, MakeCode, Code.org, JavaScript, Lua, C#, etc.)
- Bonus points: teaching/tutoring, camp counseling, Roblox Studio, Minecraft Education, or game design
- Are reliable, punctual, and high-energy - even on a Friday afternoon
- Can pass a background check
No Formal Teaching Degree Required!
We hire for passion and potential. If you're a college student, recent grad, or coding hobbyist who lights up when explaining loops to a 9-year-old, we want you. Full training + curriculum provided.
Compensation: $10.00 - $15.00 per hour
