Job description

Description
The Weiss Lab is seeking a detail-oriented work-study student to lead a high-priority digitization project. The primary goal is to convert approximately 300 physical chemistry lab notebooks into a searchable digital archive. This role is foundational to our lab's data management and will ensure decades of research are preserved and accessible. This position is based in New York, and the selected candidate will be expected to work onsite as of their effective start date.
Key Responsibilities
  • High-Resolution Scanning: Operate anoverhead scanner to create clear, high-quality PDF copies of lab notebooks.
  • Data Organization: Follow strict file-naming conventions to ensure all PDFs are easily searchable and well organized.
  • File Management: Upload completed scans to a secure local hard drive.
  • Metadata & Troubleshooting: Identify notebooks missing a primary researcher's name on the cover; log and set these aside for identification by senior lab members.
  • Quality Control: Review digital files for legibility, ensuring no pages are skipped or blurred.
  • Safety & Preservation: Handle original records with care. To ensure the integrity of the archive, the student will be required to wear nitrile exam gloves (provided) while handling the notebooks.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly pay rate for this position is $18/hour. New York University considers factors such as, but not limited to, specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
