The Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey (HGINJ) has embarked on a major initiative to encourage, foster, and support research in the life sciences within Rutgers University and the greater New Jersey community. As a part of this initiative, further research will be emphasized in five major core programs. Based on the strengths and expertise of the life sciences faculty, these programs include: Brain Disorders, Cancer Genomics, Computational Genetics, Reproductive Genetics, and Stem Cells. Each program is headed by a leading expert in the area of concentration.
The mission of the Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey (HGINJ) is to operate a world-renowned institute of excellence in human and medical genetics, to collaborate with and enhance research and training programs in the life sciences of Rutgers, and to facilitate scientific relationships with the private sector. HGINJ is comprised of prominent research scientists with specialties encompassing a broad range of topics. Areas of concentration currently include the following core programs: Brain Disorders, Cancer Genomics, Computational Genetics, Reproductive Genetics, and Stem Cells.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Lab Technician for the Department of Genetics.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs research using mouse oocytes to study processes relevant to human health and disease using genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and microscopy/imaging.
  • Works with a research supervisor but also be capable of working independently to perform lab work in this area.
  • Performs standard laboratory techniques including ability to design, organize and implement cell biology experiments, mouse transgenesis, phenotypic analysis, dissecting, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy.
  • Maintains an accurate and detailed lab notebook and presentations of data.
  • Works in a team based setting.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience.
  • An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques, and the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline.
  • Experience conducting imaging based cellular phenotyping assays.
  • Education in genetics or life sciences and experience in conducting related laboratory research.
  • Skilled with standard life science laboratory techniques such as genetic analysis, transgenesis, CRISPR and recombinant DNA techniques, phenotypic analysis, dissecting, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy.

  • Microsoft Office and Adobe.
  • PCR machines, dissecting microscopes, Leica light (inverted and upright), epifluorescence, and/or confocal microscopes.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Lift and move up to 30 pounds and operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
  • Able to stand, lift, bend.
  • Able to reach and grasp with arms and hands.
  • Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
  • Regular work week may include evening and/or weekend work.
