Clinical Lab Technologist – Anatomic Pathology

Location: Metropolitan Hospital, New York, NY 10029
Client: New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation

Schedule: Monday–Friday | Day Shift | 35 Hours/Week
Start Date: September 7, 2026

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Laboratory Technologist with strong Anatomic Pathology and laboratory leadership experience to oversee and support the daily operations of the Anatomic Pathology laboratories at Metropolitan Hospital. The ideal candidate must possess an active New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Histological Technician license, have extensive experience in Anatomic Pathology, and demonstrate strong supervisory and operational management skills.

This position will provide oversight of multiple Anatomic Pathology areas, including Histology, Cytopathology, Gross Room, Mortuary, and Chemistry Laboratory operations, while ensuring compliance with all applicable quality, safety, regulatory, and accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Anatomic Pathology laboratories.
  • Provide operational and supervisory oversight for:
    • Histology Laboratory
    • Cytopathology Laboratory
    • Gross Room
    • Mortuary
    • Chemistry Laboratory
  • Supervise laboratory personnel and support staff, including workflow coordination, scheduling, training, competency assessment, and performance management.
  • Ensure laboratory operations meet established quality assurance, quality control, safety, and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Monitor laboratory workflow and turnaround times to ensure efficient and timely processing of specimens.
  • Oversee specimen handling, accessioning, processing, grossing, tissue preparation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and other applicable Anatomic Pathology procedures.
  • Support the current Cytopathology send-out process and participate in future Cytopathology laboratory expansion initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure proper documentation, record maintenance, and compliance with laboratory regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor laboratory equipment, supplies, inventory, maintenance, and quality control processes.
  • Investigate and resolve operational, technical, and quality-related issues.
  • Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory leadership, physicians, and other healthcare departments to support high-quality laboratory services.
  • Participate in laboratory inspections, audits, accreditation activities, and corrective action plans.
  • Assist with staffing needs and ensure adequate coverage for laboratory operations.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and training to laboratory team members.
  • Identify opportunities for workflow improvement, process enhancement, and expansion of laboratory services.

Required Qualifications

  • Active New York State HT license is required.
  • Must be licensed and/or qualified as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT).
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant laboratory experience in Anatomic Pathology.
  • Experience overseeing or working with Histology, Cytopathology, Gross Room, and Mortuary operations.
  • Supervisory experience is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Technology, or Physical Sciences, or equivalent qualifying laboratory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory operations, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and laboratory safety standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of supervisory and/or laboratory management experience preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience overseeing laboratory operations preferred.
  • Previous experience leading an Anatomic Pathology laboratory.
  • Experience with laboratory workflow management, staffing, quality improvement, and regulatory inspections.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Important Requirement

This position requires an active New York State HT license and a minimum of 4 years of Anatomic Pathology experience. Candidates must also have strong supervisory experience and the ability to oversee multiple Anatomic Pathology laboratory areas.
