ย ABOUT THE POSITION:ย 

The Childrenโ€™s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) seeks energetic individuals whoย possessย a passion for education andย workingย with youngย childrenย to join our team ofย Public Programs Educators. This roleย providesย the opportunity to play, explore, and connect with visitors as they navigate the exhibits of CMOM andย participateย in specialย drop-inย programs produced by the public programs staff. Theย Public Programs Educatorย enhances theย visitor'sย experience by leading a series of public programs that involve music, movement, art, science, literacy, and culture. While leading these programs, facilitators help children (Birth-8), accompanied by their caregivers,ย practice developmental skills and connect the activity to a larger theme, all while engaging in sensorial, social, expressive, and constructive play. In thisย roleย educatorsย can exercise and extend their early childhood educational skills in a collaborative and informal setting.ย 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:ย 

  • Leadย a variety of drop-in programs and activities, includingย artmaking, storytelling, andย facilitatedย play, along withย musicย and movementย activities forย visiting families and children;ย 

  • Assistย in quality control and reset of exhibition spaces, including books, toysย (manipulatives), art supplies, and teaching objects;ย 

  • Assistย in the preparingย materials forย future family programs;ย 

  • Create a welcoming environment for families by greeting children and caregivers upon arrival, guiding them through activities, and providing materials and information to help families confidently navigate the space;ย 

  • Assistย Museumย Clean Team in disinfecting,ย cleaningย andย maintainingย programย areasย and exhibit spaces.ย

QUALIFICATIONS:ย 

  • Demonstratedย experienceย workingย with young children (ages 0 - 6)ย and familiesย in either informal or formal education settings,ย such asย museumsย or cultural institutions,ย preschoolsย orย daycares, afterschoolย programs, summerย campsย or recreational settings.ย 

  • Enthusiasm and curiosity for learning and mastering new skills on an on-going basis in arts education, early childhood, health, and S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering,ย Artsย and Math)ย 

  • Demonstrated ability to and interest in working with children and families from diverse backgroundsย 

  • Ability to interact withย patronsย and colleagues with a great sense of enthusiasm, diplomacy,ย andย professionalismย 

  • Excellentย interpersonal and professionalย communication skillsย 

  • Work independently as well as with a team or co-teacherย 

  • Can effectively communicate educational contentย andย adjustย teachingย approaches based onย constructiveย feedbackย and/or modeled teaching stylesย 

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of timeย 

ย 
Additional preferred experience:ย 

  • Experience in inquiry-based teachingย andย object observationย 

  • Demonstrated abilities in dynamic storytellingย or musical performanceย ย 

  • Proficiency in Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish to support day-to-day communication with staff and visitors.

  • Background in or studies in performingย artsย and/or visual artsย ย 

  • Background work or studies in early childhood developmentย and/or earlyย childhoodย educationย ย 

  • Experience working with children with special needs, a plusย 

  • Undergraduate degree (acquiredย or in the process) in arts education and/orย earlyย childhoodย education.ย ย 

REQUIREMENTS:ย 

  • Commitment ofย 2-3ย days per week, weekend availability required

  • Must be available to work holidaysย 

  • Must attend orientation and professional development workshops, as scheduledย 

RATE OF PAY:ย 

Hourly wage:ย $20.00/hourย
