Position Title: Healthcare Workforce Training Instructor- Adult Education
Department: Adult Education
Reports to: Director of Adult Education
Summary: South Portland Adult Education is a member of the statewide system of more than 100 connected adult learning programs and centers across the state of Maine. SPAE offers programming in four major categories:
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses provide adult multilingual learners quality study and practice in English speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills.
Workforce Training courses help prepare adult learners by providing the modern skills training necessary for new careers, promotions, and other career advancement.
College Transitions courses through the Maine College and Career Access program assist adults of all ages wishing to make the transition into college-level courses.
HiSET , the High School Equivalency test for the state of Maine, helps adults complete their high school education and move forward in their college and career goals.
South Portland Adult Education believes that all adult learners are able to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for post-secondary education, career, and citizenship. Adult learners of all backgrounds are welcomed, included, and respected as they participate in relevant and accessible high quality learning experiences to help them reach their fullest potential.
This teaching position will provide instruction to adult students enrolled in the new English for Healthcare Institute (EHI). EHI is an innovative pilot program designed to help adult learners build the English language, workplace, and academic skills needed to succeed in healthcare careers and training programs at Southern Maine Community College and in Maine's healthcare sector. Offered jointly with Southern Maine Community College and in partnership with the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce Healthcare Industry Workforce Partnership, the program combines contextualized instruction with healthcare-focused learning, career exploration, and industry-recognized certifications to prepare students for entry into short-term healthcare training and degree pathways. The position will develop an appropriate curriculum that meets the established goals while guiding and encouraging students to develop and fulfill their academic and career goals in the field of healthcare.
This position is grant-funded to teach one cohort in the evening three nights per week remotely for twelve weeks during the fall semester, September to December 2026. The position will be paid up to 182 hrs including prep and curriculum development. Based on anticipated future grant funding, an additional cohort during the spring semester, January to May 2027, and one during the summer semester, June to August 2027 may be offered.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching Duties
-Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
-Incorporate digital literacy skill building to support and differentiate learning.
-Monitor the attendance and academic progress of individual students, and determine the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional plans/techniques/goals.
-Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
-Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments.
-Employ and implement a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with program policies and procedures.
-Perform various administrative duties such as taking attendance, organizing the classroom supplies and materials, and responding to emails and WhatsApp from staff and students in a timely manner.
-Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during teaching hours.
-Support classroom volunteer, if applicable.
Advising Duties
-Provide career support, advising, and appropriate referrals to students upon program completion
-Track required student and program outcome data.
-Attend regular meetings with staff to provide assistance in curriculum development, assessing student progress and performance, and/or to participate in the program decision-making.
Education and/or Experience
-Bachelor's degree
-Interest in teaching healthcare topics and providing individualized career navigation support
-Experience working with adult multilingual learners in an educational setting is preferred.
-Current State of Maine CHRC (fingerprinting) or willingness to acquire CHRC
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
-Knowledge of instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the learner
-Knowledge of culturally competent teaching and ability to create a culturally competent classroom
-Proficiency in delivering online curriculums and implementing instructional technologies and software
-Manage the chosen learning management system (LMS) to present instruction, deliver assessments, and monitor student progress
-Skilled in planning and developing lesson plans tailored to individual students' needs
-Demonstrated ability to work well with students and staff in a professional manner
-Ability to be flexible and adapt as needed
-Ability to problem solve and be creative
-The skill and ability to communicate - both orally and in writing
-Practice of continuous professional improvement
-Evening availability is required
