What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Summer Genomic Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Genomic Intern, you typically need a background in biology or genetics, basic laboratory skills, and familiarity with genomic concepts, often gained through undergraduate coursework. Experience with bioinformatics tools, data analysis software (such as R or Python), and next-generation sequencing platforms is highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication help interns collaborate and solve problems in research environments. These skills ensure interns can contribute meaningfully to genomic projects, interpret complex data, and adapt to the fast-evolving field of genomics.

What are Summer Genomic Interns?

Summer Genomic Interns are students or early-career professionals who participate in temporary internship programs focused on genomics research during the summer months. These roles typically involve working alongside experienced scientists, assisting with laboratory experiments, data analysis, or bioinformatics projects related to genetics and genomics. The internship provides hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to cutting-edge research techniques. Summer Genomic Interns often use this opportunity to deepen their knowledge of genetics, gain practical skills, and explore possible career paths in genomics or related fields.

What types of projects and collaborations can a Summer Genomic Intern expect during their internship?

As a Summer Genomic Intern, you can expect to work on projects involving data analysis, bioinformatics pipelines, and possibly wet-lab experiments, depending on the organization. Interns often collaborate closely with researchers, lab technicians, and other interns, gaining hands-on experience with genomic datasets and tools like Python, R, or specialized sequencing software. Regular meetings and team check-ins are common, providing opportunities to discuss progress, troubleshoot challenges, and learn from experienced scientists. This collaborative environment helps interns build professional networks and develop both technical and communication skills.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

By applying rigorous statistical methods, the research focuses on interpreting and analyzing cell states to determine how genetic interventions drive phenotypic shifts. A key objective is to relate transcriptomic profiles to broader biological contexts, bridging the gap between gene expression and functional outcomes to map the rules governing immune cell behavior.

Program Highlights

  • Analyze High-Dimensional Perturbation Data: Interrogate large-scale genetic screens (e.g., Perturb-seq) to map the landscape of gene function and regulatory networks.

  • Apply Statistical Frameworks: Utilize rigorous quantitative approaches to identify robust gene expression programs and relate these transcriptomic patterns to broader spatial or genomic contexts.

  • Drive Data-Informed Validation: Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams to translate computational findings into actionable experimental targets, helping to prioritize specific hits for follow-up and functional characterization.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
