Lead School Age Teacher

Heritage Christian Youth Center– St. Clairsville, Ohio


Heritage Christian Youth Center is seeking a caring, dependable, energetic, and motivated Lead School Age Teacher to join our team in Barnesville, Ohio. This position works with children Kindergarten through 12 years old in a safe, structured, engaging, and Christ-centered before school, after school, school closure, and summer program environment.


We are looking for someone who enjoys working with older children, promotes independence, provides strong leadership within the classroom, and creates a positive, respectful, and fun learning atmosphere.

Position Overview

The Lead School Age Teacher is responsible for researching, planning, and implementing a successful Christian educational program for school-age children. This role includes classroom leadership, lesson planning, child supervision, staff support, maintaining licensing and SUTQ standards, and fostering positive relationships with children, families, and fellow staff members.

The ideal candidate is self-driven, organized, hard-working, engaging, and passionate about supporting children academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Key ResponsibilitiesChild Supervision & Classroom Leadership
  • Supervise children during before school, after school, summer camp, and school closure days
  • Ensure children are safe, accounted for, and appropriately engaged at all times
  • Assist with bus drop-off and pick-up procedures
  • Create and maintain a structured, respectful, and positive classroom environment
  • Encourage independence while maintaining appropriate supervision
  • Model respectful behavior and support positive peer interactions
  • Train, support, and guide Assistant Teachers to uphold center expectations and standards
Educational Programming & Enrichment
  • Research, plan, and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities
  • Provide weekly and monthly schedules of engaging educational and recreational activities
  • Incorporate math, literacy, games, storytelling, music, creative play, and physical activities into programming
  • Assist children with homework and academic enrichment activities
  • Encourage teamwork, problem-solving, responsibility, and positive decision-making
  • Lead classroom activities in a Christ-centered manner, including prayer time when appropriate
Behavior Guidance & Social-Emotional Development
  • Use positive guidance, redirection, and encouragement to support children’s behavior
  • Help children develop social-emotional skills, self-esteem, and responsibility
  • Reinforce classroom and center expectations consistently
  • Provide active care by establishing routines and communicating effectively with children in an age-appropriate manner
Safety, Licensing & Program Compliance
  • Maintain compliance with Ohio licensing standards, administrative codes, and SUTQ requirements
  • Ensure classrooms, equipment, and outdoor play areas remain clean, organized, and safe
  • Maintain classroom documentation including:
    • Attendance records
    • Incident reports
    • Medication forms
    • Observation reports
    • Child evaluations and assessments
  • Assist and participate in emergency procedures, drills, and center safety practices
  • Report concerns, incidents, injuries, or safety issues to Administration immediately
Family Communication & Teamwork
  • Build positive relationships with children, families, staff, and administration
  • Communicate professionally with parents verbally and through daily reports
  • Discuss children’s development and classroom progress with families when needed
  • Work collaboratively with Administration and fellow staff members to maintain an efficient and supportive environment
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, parent conferences, open houses, and center events
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, staff, and center information

Physical Requirements

This role requires the ability to:

  • Stand, walk, run, bend, crouch, and actively engage with children throughout the day
  • Lift up to 50 pounds when necessary
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Supervise active play environments including playgrounds, gyms, and outdoor activities
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with school-age children in a childcare, daycare, educational, or similar setting preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • CDA Certification or equivalent preferred
    (Scholarship opportunities available for eligible candidates to obtain CDA certification)
  • Understanding of school-age development and best practices in child supervision and safety
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Passion for working with children and supporting their growth and development
