What are the typical challenges faced by a Summer Computer Vision Postdoc working in a research environment?

As a Summer Computer Vision Postdoc, you may encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to new research topics, handling large and complex datasets, and optimizing algorithms for practical performance. Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams is common, requiring clear communication of technical concepts to colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, you will likely balance multiple projects within a limited timeframe, making effective time management and prioritization essential for success.

What is a Summer Computer Vision Postdoc?

A Summer Computer Vision Postdoc is a temporary research position, typically lasting a few months over the summer, for individuals who have recently earned a PhD in a relevant field such as computer science or electrical engineering. The role focuses on conducting advanced research in computer vision, which involves enabling computers to interpret and process visual information from the world. Postdocs work alongside faculty and research teams, contributing to projects, publishing papers, and gaining additional experience before pursuing faculty positions or industry roles. These positions often emphasize innovation, collaboration, and the practical application of state-of-the-art computer vision techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Summer Computer Vision Postdoc, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Computer Vision Postdoc, you need a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, and programming, typically supported by a PhD in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), image processing libraries (like OpenCV), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, research communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams will make you stand out in this role. These skills ensure you can effectively develop novel algorithms, communicate findings, and contribute to advancing the state of computer vision research.

Responsibilities

The Departments of Radiology and Psychiatry are currently seeking a talented Postdoctoral Fellow to support ongoing multidisciplinary neuroimaging research projects exploring brain structure and neural network mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders, such as cognitive impairment and bipolar disorder. The successful candidate will develop and implement novel pulse sequences and reconstruction algorithms to improve the spatial-temporal resolution of dynamic MRI, thereby enhancing human brain imaging, particularly in cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) mapping and functional MRI (fMRI). As a neuroimaging research fellow at Mayo Clinic, you will be working under the direct supervision and mentorship of Dr. Yuxiang Zhang, Ph.D., and Dr. Osama A. Abulseoud, MD.

You will collect, process and analyze structural, diffusion tensor imaging and fMRI neuroimaging data with standard software such as AFNI, SPM, FreeSurfer, Matlab, and Python. Also, you  will develop new MR imaging pulse sequences on MRI scanners, adapt, and implement new imaging protocols and perform complex-valued signal modeling and statistical analysis of BOLD responses, including echo combination strategies and CO2 challenge protocols.

You will have the opportunity to develop excellent oral communication skills and present scientific work in departmental grand rounds, journal clubs, and academic seminars such as ISMRM to disseminate research findings within and outside the department. Our departments are committed to the mentorship and professional development of trainees in a collegial and supportive environment. As a research fellow, you will have the opportunity to participate in professional development activities and workshops.

A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic.

Qualifications

Must have a Ph.D., degree in physics, chemistry, biophysics, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, computer science, neuroscience, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, in addition to technical expertise in MRI physics and advanced programming skills.

The ideal candidate will have a solid commitment to team science and multi-departmental collaboration, strong communication skills, a track record of research in neuroimaging in human subjects, and/or experience with advanced quantitative methods, including computational modeling, machine learning, and analysis of structural and functional neuroimaging data.

If you are interested, please submit your CV and Cover Letter, along with the name and contact information of two referees who have worked with the applicant in a supervisory research role or related position. The Cover Letter should include the applicant's research interests and academic/technical training, as well as their current skills and training goals. Please contact Dr. Osama A. Abulseoud at abulseoud.osama@mayo.edu if you have any questions.

Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere.
