Job description

A. Morton Thomas and Associates, Inc. (AMT) is seeking a motivated CAD Intern to join our civil Engineering team in our Christiansburg office. This position is ideal for a student or recent graduate interested in developing hands-on experience in construction plan drafting and general project support within a civil engineering environment.
 
This internship is designed as a training opportunity with the goal of identifying a strong long-term candidate for future full-time employment.
We are looking for someone with strong potential and the ability to learn, even if they do not yet have professional experience.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in preparing and revising civil engineering construction plans using AutoCAD
  • Draft plan sheets, details, profiles, and related design documents
  • Apply established company and industry drafting standards
  • Incorporate markups and revisions from engineers and project managers
  • Help create technical reports, cost estimates, and project documentation
  • Assist with preparation of permit applications and submission packages
  • Support file organization, document management, and other administrative project tasks
  • Learn how engineering concepts are translated into construction documents and regulatory submittals
Qualifications
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to follow standards, templates, and technical instructions consistently
  • Good spatial reasoning and visualization skills
  • Ability to understand how individual drawing elements fit into an overall project
  • Strong written and organizational skills for reports and documentation
  • Ability to learn and willingness accept feedback

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework, training, or certification in AutoCAD / CAD drafting

  • No prior professional experience is required. We are willing to train the right candidate.
    Success in this role requires strong attention to standards, accuracy, and the ability to visualize how a project is constructed from plan drawings.
