Summer Civil Engineering Student information

What is a summer civil engineering student?

Summer Civil Engineering Students are typically undergraduate or graduate students studying civil engineering who take on temporary positions or internships during the summer months. These roles provide hands-on experience in the field, allowing students to apply classroom theory to real-world engineering projects. Their tasks may include assisting with site inspections, drafting plans, conducting surveys, and supporting project management. These opportunities help students gain practical skills, build professional networks, and enhance their resumes for future employment in civil engineering.

How does a summer civil engineering student typically contribute to project teams, and what kind of mentorship can be expected during the internship?

As a Summer Civil Engineering Student, you will often assist project teams by supporting site inspections, drafting technical reports, and performing basic design calculations under supervision. You can expect to work closely with both junior and senior engineers, frequently collaborating in team meetings and on-site visits. Most firms provide structured mentorship, pairing interns with experienced engineers who offer guidance, feedback, and opportunities to shadow various aspects of civil engineering projects. This hands-on involvement helps you build practical skills while gaining a clear understanding of how engineering teams operate in real-world environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer civil engineering student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Civil Engineering Student, you need foundational knowledge in engineering principles, mathematics, and science, typically gained through current enrollment in a civil engineering degree program. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office, as well as basic surveying equipment, is often expected. Strong teamwork, communication, and eagerness to learn help you stand out in collaborative project environments. These skills and qualities are essential for effectively supporting engineering teams, gaining practical experience, and contributing to successful project outcomes.

Job description

Bridge the Gap Between Classroom and Career
Are you a Civil Engineering student ready to move beyond the textbook? Join Thompson & Litton in our Radford office for a hands-on internship that puts you at the center of land development and infrastructure design. This isn't just a role for 'assisting'-it's an opportunity to learn the intricacies of site development, stormwater management, and utility design while working directly alongside licensed Professional Engineers (PEs).
The Role: What You'll Do
As a Civil Engineer Intern, you will be an integral part of our design team, supporting both public and private sector projects that shape the Southwest Virginia landscape. You will:
  • Design & Draft: Support the development of conceptual site layouts and construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Solve Problems: Assist with grading design, earthwork analyses, and complex stormwater management systems.
  • Navigate Regulations: Research municipal zoning and development ordinances to ensure project compliance.
  • Get in the Field: Participate in site visits and field investigations to see how plans translate to reality.
  • Build the Foundation: Help prepare engineering reports, technical specifications, and project proposals.
What You'll Bring
  • Current Pursuit: You are currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program for Civil Engineering.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal skills to help translate technical data into clear reports.
  • Tech Savvy: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
Preferred Skills (The 'Nice-to-Haves')
  • Experience or interest in AutoCAD or Civil 3D.
  • Coursework emphasis in land development, water resources, or transportation.
  • A detail-oriented mindset and a desire to work in a collaborative, team-centric environment.
Why Thompson & Litton?
We are a multi-disciplined firm dedicated to serving our clients and our communities. As an intern, you'll receive mentorship from experienced project managers and gain the practical experience necessary to jumpstart your career in civil engineering. If you fit this role, we want to hear from you!
