What is a summer animation internship?

A Summer Animation Internship is a temporary, hands-on position where students or recent graduates gain experience in animation production. Interns typically work with professional animators, assisting in tasks like storyboarding, character design, motion graphics, or 3D modeling. These internships provide valuable industry exposure, networking opportunities, and skill development. They are commonly available at animation studios, game companies, and media organizations.

What types of projects or tasks do summer animation interns typically work on during their internship?

As a Summer Animation Intern, you may assist in creating storyboards, developing character or background art, animating scenes, or supporting ongoing production tasks depending on the studio's current projects. Interns often work closely with animators, directors, and other creative team members, gaining hands-on experience with real production pipelines. While responsibilities can vary, you should expect to attend team meetings, participate in feedback sessions, and sometimes present your work for review. This immersive environment provides a valuable opportunity to learn industry workflows and develop your portfolio before entering a full-time animation role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a summer animation internship?

To excel in a Summer Animation Internship, a solid understanding of animation principles, proficiency in drawing or digital art, and relevant coursework in animation or film are essential. Experience with industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, After Effects), Toon Boom, or Maya is highly valued. These skills enable interns to contribute meaningfully to creative projects while learning from experienced professionals in a fast-paced studio environment.

How to get a summer animation internship?

To secure a summer animation internship, applicants should build a strong portfolio showcasing their animation skills, proficiency in tools like Adobe After Effects or Maya, and relevant coursework or projects. Applying early, networking with industry professionals, and demonstrating a passion for animation can improve chances of acceptance.
