Job description

Residence Life Nurse Job Description

The person hired for this position would be available for the start of the school year in August 2026. The Residence Life Nurse supports the medical health, safety, and well-being of approximately 120 domestic and international boarding students. This position provides evening, overnight, and weekend nursing support within the Boarding Village and collaborates closely with the Health Services and Residence Life teams to ensure coordinated, responsive, and compassionate care for boarding students. The Residence Life Nurse reports directly to the Director of Health Services.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 3:30-10:30pm (excluding Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break, Summer Break) August 3, 2026 - May 20, 2027

Additional pay: Required daytime meetings, support for daytime health screenings and needs by the Health Services team, and significant hours supporting the health and safety of boarding students outside scheduled hours (overnight and weekends) will be eligible for additional hourly payment.

Qualifications:
  • Licensed nurse in the State of Texas with a valid license to practice professional nursing.
  • A minimum of two years of nursing experience, preferably in school nursing, community health, pediatrics, or emergency medicine.
  • Certified by the State of Texas to conduct vision and hearing screening (or obtain upon employment)
  • Certified by the State of Texas to conduct scoliosis screening (or obtain upon employment)
  • CPR Certification (BLS)
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide nursing support and medical care for boarding students during evening, overnight, and weekend hours within the residential program.
  • Assess student health concerns, provide appropriate care, and respond effectively to medical emergencies and urgent situations.
  • Assess for urgent and non-urgent mental health concerns and communicate appropriately with the Health Services team, Residence Life staff, school administration, counselors, and parents/guardians.
  • Dispense prescription and over-the-counter medications according to physician instructions and school protocols; maintain accurate documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Provide care for acute illnesses, injuries, and chronic medical conditions, including monitoring students recovering in the dormitories while on duty.
  • Coordinate medical appointments, referrals, follow-up care, and communication with healthcare providers as needed for boarding students.
  • Communicate professionally and proactively with boarding parents/guardians regarding student medical care, treatment recommendations, and ongoing health concerns.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Health Services, Director of Residence Life, House Parents, counselors, and other school staff to support student health, safety, and well-being.
  • Support House Parents and Residence Life staff in understanding and following medical systems, restrictions, and protocols for student care within the residential environment.
  • Prepare and organize medications for weekends, school breaks, and student travel in collaboration with House Parents and boarding families.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records, including immunizations, medication administration logs, and treatment documentation.
  • Ensure clinic readiness by monitoring medical supply levels, tracking expiration dates, and maintaining proper medication and equipment storage.
  • Participate in biweekly nursing staff meetings, SHAC meetings, health screenings, and other Health Services initiatives as assigned.
  • Participate in and occasionally lead staff training related to student health and safety, including CPR, AED use, EpiPen administration, bloodborne pathogens, and suicide prevention.
  • Serve as the on-call nurse for boarding students during designated overnight and weekend periods.
  • Assist with daytime nursing coverage, school trips, or additional Health Services support as needed.
  • Participate in the assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Health Services.
