REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Hourly Non-Exempt

COMPENSATION: Based on Classified Substitute Pay Model

WORK CALENDAR: As Needed

STANDARD HOURS: As Assigned

Position Summary

The Substitute Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, extracurricular activities, and other approved district events in the absence of a regular route driver. The substitute driver promotes a safe, orderly, and positive environment while ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and Greenwood Community School Corporation transportation policies and procedures.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Safely operate a school bus on assigned routes and trips in accordance with all traffic laws and school bus regulations.
  • Conduct required pre-trip, post-trip, and safety inspections of the assigned vehicle.
  • Transport students safely to and from school, field trips, athletic events, and other district-sponsored activities.
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior and enforce district transportation rules while on the bus.
  • Follow established routes, schedules, and emergency procedures.
  • Assist students with boarding, exiting, and securing seat belts or safety equipment when applicable.
  • Report student discipline concerns, accidents, mechanical issues, and safety hazards promptly to the Transportation Department.
  • Complete required transportation records, inspection reports, and documentation accurately and timely.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly bus interior and report maintenance needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and district information.
  • Communicate professionally with students, parents, school staff, and transportation personnel.
  • Attend required training sessions, meetings, and certification renewals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid Indiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements, or the ability to obtain required licensure and endorsements.
  • Valid Indiana Department of Education School Bus Driver Certification, or ability to obtain certification.
  • Current Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Satisfactory driving record and successful completion of all required background checks and drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Previous school bus driving experience is preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safe school bus operation and defensive driving practices.
  • Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor in challenging situations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing routes and schedules.
