Position Scope and Organizational Impact
The MOSS Senior Substation Electrical Superintendent is responsible for providing senior-level field leadership, planning, coordination, and supervision for electrical construction activities associated with utility-scale solar, BESS, and substation projects. This role leads forepersons, general forepersons, craft personnel, subcontractors, and specialty contractors performing medium- and high-voltage electrical work.
The Senior Substation Electrical Superintendent is accountable for safely delivering electrical and substation scopes in accordance with project drawings, specifications, quality requirements, budget, and schedule. The role requires strong expertise in substation construction, including equipment installation, cable systems, grounding, protection and control, testing coordination, energization readiness, and interface management with utilities, owners, engineers, and commissioning teams.
This position requires extensive travel and the ability to work on projects throughout the United States.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide visible, proactive leadership for all substation electrical construction activities, with safety as the highest priority.
- Plan, direct, and supervise electrical craft and subcontractor activities for utility-scale solar, BESS, collector substation, switchyard, and interconnection scopes.
- Develop and execute detailed construction plans, including methods of construction, manpower loading, equipment needs, material quantities, temporary power requirements, work sequencing, labor budgets, and productivity targets.
- Lead installation activities involving, as applicable:
- Medium- and high-voltage cable systems
- Duct banks, cable tray, conduit, and underground electrical infrastructure
- Substation grounding grids and lightning protection systems
- Transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, reclosers, capacitors, reactors, and associated equipment
- Steel structures, buswork, insulators, and overhead conductor systems
- Protection and control panels, relay systems, SCADA, communications, fiber, and station service systems
- Coordinate electrical construction work with civil, mechanical, structural, commissioning, quality, procurement, engineering, and other project teams.
- Maintain close coordination with utilities, owners, engineers, inspectors, commissioning agents, and subcontractors to support project milestones, outages, testing, and energization activities.
- Review and interpret electrical one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, grounding plans, protection-and-control drawings, civil interface drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
- Ensure all work is installed in compliance with approved drawings, specifications, applicable codes, utility standards, and project quality requirements.
- Identify, communicate, and assist in resolving construction challenges, including productivity constraints, design conflicts, material shortages, work-package interfaces, schedule impacts, and field changes.
- Monitor and document field productivity, actual labor hours, crew performance, schedule progress, and cost performance. Prepare or support manpower forecasts, man-hour reports, workforce plans, and job-cost reporting.
- Coordinate with Material Control, Purchasing, Engineering, Quality Control, and Logistics to ensure material availability, equipment readiness, inspections, and deliveries support planned construction activities.
- Lead and support look-ahead planning, daily work planning, weekly coordination meetings, and schedule updates.
- Enforce project safety requirements, conduct field safety observations, ensure corrective actions are implemented, and lead by example in maintaining a safety-first culture.
- Support quality-control inspections, punch-list completion, turnover documentation, testing readiness, commissioning coordination, and energization preparation.
- Delegate responsibilities effectively to general forepersons, forepersons, and lead craft personnel while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standard.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, utility representatives, subcontractors, and internal project teams through responsive, professional service.
- Mentor, train, and develop field leadership personnel to strengthen the electrical construction organization.
- Perform additional assignments and other duties as directed by the General Superintendent or project leadership.
Education and Work Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical, trade-school, or associate degree in electrical technology or construction management preferred.
- Must prioritize safety above all else and lead by example.
- OSHA 30 certification required; additional electrical safety, NFPA 70E, first aid/CPR, or utility safety training is strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of electrical construction experience, including significant experience in utility-scale solar, BESS, substations, transmission, distribution, or heavy industrial electrical construction.
- Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in utility-scale solar, BESS, substation, transmission, distribution, or comparable heavy electrical construction.
- Previous experience as a General Foreman, Electrical Superintendent, or Senior Electrical Superintendent required.
- Demonstrated experience leading large electrical craft workforces, including supervision of 50 or more employees and multiple forepersons or subcontractor crews.
- Demonstrated experience with utility-scale substation construction, including medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, grounding, underground electrical infrastructure, equipment setting, protection and controls, and energization support.
- Strong knowledge of electrical construction means and methods, material planning, equipment utilization, labor forecasting, work packaging, and schedule management.
- Proven ability to read, interpret, and work from electrical design drawings, including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, isometric and orthographic drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, design guides, specifications, and contract documents.
- Experience coordinating subcontractors, work interfaces, construction sequencing, utility requirements, and site logistics.
- Demonstrated experience preparing or reviewing man-hour reports, productivity reports, job-cost reports, labor budgets, and workforce plans.
- Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, safe work practices, and quality requirements for utility-scale electrical construction.
