How does a Subcontractor Manager typically coordinate with project teams to ensure deliverables are met on time?

A Subcontractor Manager works closely with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to align subcontractor activities with overall project timelines. This involves regular progress meetings, clear communication of project expectations, and proactive issue resolution. By maintaining consistent contact with both internal and external stakeholders, the Subcontractor Manager ensures that deliverables are on track and compliance standards are upheld, minimizing delays and facilitating smooth project execution.

What are subcontractor managers?

Subcontractor managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the selection, coordination, and performance of subcontractors on a project. They ensure that subcontractors meet project requirements, adhere to schedules, and comply with safety and quality standards. Their role often involves negotiating contracts, managing relationships, resolving issues, and facilitating communication between subcontractors and the main contractor to ensure successful project completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Subcontractor Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Subcontractor Manager, you need strong project management abilities, contract negotiation skills, and a background in construction management or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Procore), procurement systems, and relevant certifications like PMP are often required. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills help build effective relationships with subcontractors and ensure smooth project execution. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to quality standards while minimizing risks and disputes.

Job description

About the Role
Do you thrive in leading field execution where schedule discipline, coordination, and operational excellence directly drive project success? We're looking for an experienced Senior Construction Manager - Division 27 to own execution of structured cabling and low-voltage infrastructure systems across complex and mission-critical construction projects.
In this role, you'll take ownership of all Division 27 scope, leading field operations through self-perform crews, subcontractors, and field leadership teams to ensure installations are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. You'll oversee production, installation sequencing, room readiness, network infrastructure, and turnover performance while ensuring work progresses as a fully coordinated and integrated system-not simply as isolated task completion.
From startup and planning through testing and turnover, you'll maintain accountability for execution, productivity, and delivery readiness while helping build scalable field teams capable of long-term success.
What You'll Do - Lead Production. Drive Readiness.
  • Direct all Division 27 field operations across foremen, field leadership, self-perform crews, and subcontracted teams.
  • Drive Structured Cabling Installation
  • Drive installation sequencing and workflow planning to align with release dates, short-interval planning, and project milestones.
  • Partner closely with Division 26E, Division 28, and related trades to ensure systems are properly coordinated and installation dependencies are aligned.
  • Ensure adherence to installation standards, productivity expectations, material readiness requirements, and milestone commitments.
  • Manage Daily Field Performance
  • Enforce Installation Standards
  • Proactively identify and remove coordination issues, access challenges, sequencing conflicts, and production barriers.
  • Assist with startup planning, strike-team deployment, and implementation of execution standards across project teams.
  • Implement corrective actions when project schedules, workforce productivity, or production goals are at risk.
  • Lead Subcontractor Performance
  • Oversee punch list resolution, testing validation, documentation completion, and turnover preparation activities.
  • Coach and mentor Foremen and frontline leaders to build scalable teams capable of independently executing work packages.
  • Remain actively engaged onsite to ensure alignment between planning assumptions and actual execution conditions.

Systems & Infrastructure You'll Support
  • Copper and fiber infrastructure, horizontal cabling systems, and backbone environments
  • MDF/IDF environments, network rooms, and supporting infrastructure systems
  • Pathways, supports, cable management systems, and integrated communication infrastructure
  • Data centers and highly complex infrastructure projects requiring precision execution
  • Division 27, Division 26E, Division 28, and supporting construction disciplines
  • System readiness, punch list management, commissioning support, and closeout processes

What You Bring
  • 8-12+ years of experience in construction execution, field operations, or mission-critical infrastructure environments
  • Demonstrated experience managing Division 27, structured cabling, or low-voltage installation scopes
  • Proven ability to lead both self-perform crews and subcontracted field operations
  • Deep understanding of structured cabling systems, network environments, and low-voltage infrastructure
  • Strong field leadership presence with the ability to assess workface conditions and drive execution discipline
  • Experience managing room readiness, release-to-work sequencing, and schedule-driven production environments
  • Strong subcontractor management experience including manpower planning, sequencing control, quality oversight, and closeout management
  • Experience coordinating across multiple trades within technically complex environments
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with demonstrated success removing field barriers and maintaining production flow
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop Foremen and frontline leaders
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to drive accountability across teams and stakeholders
  • Ability to balance schedule, productivity, quality, safety, and turnover objectives
  • High attention to detail with strong planning and organizational discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to manage work through release and turnover gates rather than solely labor progress metrics
  • Background in data center or large-scale infrastructure projects strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with Division 26 and Division 28 interface work preferred
  • Experience supporting testing, commissioning, and turnover-driven environments preferred
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred
  • Trade background in low-voltage, structured cabling, or electrical systems strongly preferred

What's in It for You?
  • Take ownership of critical infrastructure systems and directly influence project outcomes.
  • Lead execution on complex, technically challenging, and mission-critical projects.
  • Partner with project leadership, technical teams, field operations, and customers to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Expand your leadership capabilities while helping shape scalable construction operations.
  • Comprehensive compensation package including benefits, development opportunities, and long-term career growth.

Work Environment
This role operates primarily within active construction environments and requires regular standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Close visual attention is required when reviewing plans, specifications, field documentation, and installation conditions.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.
Ready to Lead Complex Infrastructure Execution?
If you're energized by field leadership, structured cabling systems, and driving highly coordinated execution across mission-critical projects, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today and help build the infrastructure powering tomorrow's connected environments.
