Title: SASS Student Assistant - Student Academic Support Services

Pay Range: $16.90 - $17.50

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Report to: Director of Student Academic Support Services (SASS) and designated SASS professional staff

Brief Description

The Student Assistant is a member of the Student Academic Support Services (SASS) team, supporting Academic Advising, Career Services, the Testing Center, and other student success initiatives. This position serves as a first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, while also assisting with student outreach and retention efforts, administrative projects, and departmental events. The ideal candidate is dependable, organized, professional, and enjoys helping students succeed.

Essential Functions / Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Welcome students, faculty, staff, and visitors; answer phones, respond to general inquiries, schedule appointments, and direct individuals to appropriate campus resources.
  • Support student retention by conducting outreach (calls, emails, texts) to students regarding registration, appointments, holds, and deadlines, and by documenting all interactions accurately in university systems.
  • Help identify students needing additional follow-up and communicate concerns to professional staff; assist with reminder campaigns for orientation, workshops, testing, and advising appointments.
  • Assist Academic Advising with appointment preparation, informational packets, data entry, report preparation, and maintenance of accurate student records.
  • Support Career Services with basic navigation of career resources, career fair and workshop preparation, employer event setup and check-in, and resume review event logistics.
  • Assist the Testing Center with check-in procedures, preparation of testing materials and spaces, schedule maintenance, and supply monitoring.
  • Complete general administrative support, including filing, copying, scanning, data entry, inventory, and special projects assigned by professional staff.
  • Create and update flyers, handouts, and digital materials; assist with social media content and departmental websites; photograph or support student events as needed.
  • Assist with planning and coordination of registration events, career fairs, orientation, workshops, and other student success events, including setup, cleanup, and guest support.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional front desk and shared office environment, and assist with opening and closing procedures. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Qualifications

  • Must be a team player, problem-solver, and self-starter with a positive attitude and strong attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Must be able to maintain confidentiality (FERPA), exercise sound judgment, work both independently and collaboratively, and adapt when priorities change.

Education/Experience

  • Current La Sierra University student in good academic standing required. Previous customer service or office experience preferred.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace required. Ability to learn new software systems quickly; experience with Canva, social media, or graphic design is a plus.

Confidentiality

  • Works with confidential and sensitive student information. Must uphold FERPA regulations and institutional confidentiality standards at all times.
