Job Description Summary
The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides academic support across all majors and disciplines with the goal of helping students become engaged, self-sufficient learners who are confident in their abilities to reach their academic goals. ASC's Success Coaching program serves all ULV students, helping them to develop skills and habits that aid in personal, professional, and academic success. ASC Success Coaches collaboratively develop individualized coaching plans with students, focusing on goal setting and benchmarks for achievement. Success Coaches also support students on academic probation and reinstatement, incorporating accountability, study strategies, time management, self-organization, and techniques to aid in building self-confidence so students can achieve success and retention in college. Success Coaches work with students individually and in groups, facilitate class visits and workshops, create student resources, and work with ASC professional staff on retention initiatives and outreach.
Specific Duties
  • Offer individual coaching appointments, as well as drop-in coaching, to assist students with skills that may be hindering their success, such as time management, achieving balance, goal-setting and accountability, managing academic anxiety, etc. Appointments are held in-person and online within the ASC. Report accurate data for all sessions and service efforts.
  • Collaborate with ASC professional staff and/or campus partners to offer targeted coaching support for distinct student populations (Academic Probation and Reinstatement students, Living Learning Communities, Student Leaders, Accessibility Services, SOS referrals, and faculty/staff referral students.)
  • Develop and facilitate class visits and workshops, as assigned by ASC professional staff, on holistic skills such as goal setting, time management, self organization, study skills, stress management, etc.
  • Develop supplemental materials as assigned by ASC professional staff (ASC coaching content, student resources, relevant social media posts, events, etc...)
  • Complete supplemental ASC activities, including Coach reflections, observations, co-coaching sessions, trainings, etc. as assigned by ASC professional staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by ASC Director and/or Professional Staff

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a current ULV student
  • A strong academic background (minimum overall GPA of 3.25).
  • Ability to communicate effectively to help students construct their own understandings of themselves and what habits will help them to be successful. Desire to support peers' social and emotional wellness, as well as their academic and professional endeavors.
  • Ability to listen to the needs of students and work cooperatively in setting realistic and productive learning goals as well as objectives for reaching those goals.
  • Sensitivity to the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds of ASC students
  • Dependability, personal accountability, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others
  • Self-motivation, self-regulation, and a desire to mature and learn in a professional
  • teaching/learning environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous academic support experience, particularly in supporting students with documented disabilities
  • Previous tutoring experience
  • Leadership experience and campus involvement

Benefits Summary
Employees are eligible for the following benefits:
One hour of Paid Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 24 hours of Paid Sick Leave per year and capped at 48 hours.
University of La Verne Defined Contribution Retirement Plan - can contribute employee voluntary contributions, excluding wages derived from federal work study funds.
In accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employees who work an average of 30 or more hours per week, will be eligible for medical coverage through the University of La Verne.
Covered under the University of La Verne Workers Compensation Insurance.
