Job description

The Water Use Efficiency Branch, for the Department of Water Resources (DWR), is responsible for implementing statewide urban and agricultural water use efficiency programs, strengthening local drought resilience, managing the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS), and collecting and analyzing data on California's urban and agricultural land and water use. Under the close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the Student Assistant (Engineering and Architectural Sciences), CIMIS unit, will work on the following tasks:
  • Support CIMIS staff with studies related to evapotranspiration estimation, water conservation, and water use efficiency projects.
  • Assist CIMIS staff with entering weather station sensor and equipment information into the CIMIS maintenance database, including gathering serial numbers and other relevant data.
  • Organize equipment at the CIMIS workshops. Conduct data analysis tasks, including preliminary data checks, creation and maintenance of spreadsheets, and basic statistical analysis.
  • Support CIMIS staff in conducting scientific research in atmospheric science, irrigation, and hydrology, as well as in outreach and engagement activities.
  • Assist with field activities, including setting up equipment and collecting data.
    Use geographic information system (GIS) software to analyze CIMIS spatial data.
  • Attend meetings and workshops and help with distributing CIMIS-related materials.
  • Provide support to other staff within the Water Use Efficiency Branch as needed.

Special Requirements
All applicants for Student Assistant positions must meet the following departmental eligibility requirements:
  • Enrolled in nine (9) semester/eight (8) quarter units for undergraduate students or six (6) semester/four (4) quarter units for graduate students.
  • Achieved a 2.0 grade point average in the most recently completed academic term.
  • Declared a major related to the duties of the advertised position and enrolled in coursework required for that major.

  • Student Assistant employees are paid hourly and are limited to 1500 hours per 12 consecutive months.
    The duties require occasional travel to attend meetings, training, and/or field visits.

    Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
    The ideal candidate will have good numerical skills and understanding of computation, organization skills, problem solving skills, the ability to be a good team player, working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel, and have a working knowledge of basic office equipment. Experience with outreach activities and/or workshops. Works cooperatively with the public and fellow staff; has good oral and written communication skills and is comfortable speaking in large groups.
    The incumbent must work cooperatively with others, maintain regular/ consistent and predictable attendance, be able to work during the school year and during summer, exercise good judgment and have good verbal and written communication skills. Background in irrigation, statistics, Geographic Information System (GIS), atmospheric sciences, or urban and agricultural water use efficiency is recommended. Experience with field and lab equipment desirable.
