Description

The Santa Clarita Community College District/College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Nurse (Student Health Center) in the Student Services division.
Salary placement will be on Range 50 of Classified Salary Schedule B. Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($7,627.00 / $8,092.00 / $8,562.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.
Probationary period for new Classified Represented employees is six months. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.

Position Description:
Under the direction of the Director, Student Health and Wellness Center (SHWC), the Registered Nurse performs a variety of health services including providing nursing assessment and intervention to students; assisting in the delivery of health education services in the classroom and assisting Medical, Advanced Practice (NP, PA) and Mental Health Providers with the daily clinical services and/or operations; and other related duties as required and are within the RN scope of practice. Additional duties as assigned.
Example of Duties
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
  1. Assist the Director of the Student Health and Wellness Center with the planning, development and implementation of student health services.
  2. Employ a system of triage, identifying symptoms and behaviors, making independent nursing judgment regarding illness and injury and determines an appropriate course of action.
  3. Provide basic first aid and initial emergency care intervention utilizing EMS when necessary.
  4. Provide crisis intervention and referral for distraught students.
  5. Performs phlebotomy and prepares specimens to send to outside laboratory.
  6. Performs limited in-office CLIA-waived laboratory tests.
  7. Maintain accurate medical records and protect privileged information.
  8. Inform students of health insurance options; may refer students for assistance with Medi-Cal, or Family PACT insurance.
  9. Perform health-screening tests requiring specific expertise; review test results; consult with the appropriate health care professional regarding additional testing and/or referrals as needed.
  10. Advise students on a one-to-one basis for immediate problem solving and/or development of an individual health plan. This plan may include acquainting the student with private or community-based resources through which additional assistance may be obtained.
  11. Assist with health education programs on a broad range of health and wellness issues. Facilitate groups, workshops and outreach events on a variety of health promotion issues.
  12. Assist in organizing and maintaining a variety of confidential health records and files related to routine health care, student insurance, accident reports, and statistics.
  13. Assist in data collection and analysis from daily documentation, surveys, student learning outcomes and other sources. Utilize data analysis to plan ongoing health services, prepare written reports, contribute to grant proposals and document the changing health needs of our population.
  14. Maintain and order adequate levels of stock medication and medical supplies.
  15. Manage and monitor the maintenance and upkeep of all medical equipment.
  16. Organize and maintain examination rooms and other Health Center rooms in a clean and orderly condition.
  17. Serve as a liaison between the college and community-based referral agencies.
  18. Assist in the review and critique of policies, procedures, protocols and referral resources.
  19. Act as a resource person regarding matters related to campus health and safety.
  20. Maintain current CPR and first aid certificate training.
  21. Ensure adherence to HIPAA and FERPA guidelines.
  22. Learn and apply emerging technologies and advances as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.
  23. Perform duties at all district sites.
  24. Work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  25. Possess experience, and use/ knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  26. Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

Demonstrated Knowledge and Abilities:
Position requires knowledge of:
  1. HIPAA and FERPA guidelines.
  2. California Nurse Practice Act.
  3. General nursing skills required of a Registered Nurse.
  4. Assessment techniques and nursing interventions for chronic and acute physical, mental, social and emotional problems.
  5. Local health and human care resources.
  6. Current techniques and practices in basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  7. Principles of communicable disease prevention and control.
  8. Working knowledge of various electronic equipment, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and various database software.
  9. District, policies and procedures.
  10. State and local health mandates and regulations.

Position requires ability to:
  1. Perform venipuncture.
  2. Perform medical and psychological health assessments applying nursing practices and processes.
  3. Triage.
  4. Give immunizations and perform TB skin testing.
  5. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with good interpersonal communication skills.
  6. Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  7. Ability to identify symptoms and behavior, make independent nursing judgment regarding illnesses and determine a course of action.
  8. Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  9. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
  10. Ability to meet schedules and timelines.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements
Experience:
  • Two (2) years of professional nursing experience within the last five (5) years, including experience in an outpatient, public health, or school/college health setting.
  • Experience in health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Experience or professional training in one or more of the following specialty areas: crisis intervention, mental health, drug and alcohol referral, and sexual assault response.
Education:
BSN required. Public health nurse certificate desirable. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
License Required (current):
Required:
  • Valid and current Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California Board Registered Nursing.
  • Possess, or be able to obtain a CPR and basic first aid certification.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
Preferred:
  • Possess, or be able to obtain a California Public Health Nurse Certificate.

Physical Characteristics:
Communicate effectively via in-person, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email; Position requires use of a computer for extended periods of time; reaching, bending, and stooping; frequently exertion of force of up to 10 to 25 pounds to move objects; communicate and provide information to others; travel from site to site. All district employees may be called upon to be emergency service workers in the event of an emergency.
