Job Description

The Savitt Medical Library, primarily serving the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) School of Medicine, is recruiting for a Student Library Assistant who is interested in starting work during Summer 2026 and continuing their employment through the school year.

At Savitt, our student assistants serve as the face of our library, assisting medical students, faculty, and members of the public in various capacities while maintaining a polite, professional demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Staffing the circulation desk during open hours
  • Answering telephones and transferring calls when needed
  • Answering patron questions using all available resources
  • Searching the library catalog using Primo and Alma
  • Taking study room reservations and entering them in LibCal
  • Processing holds
  • Checking items out and in
  • Reshelving materials in the correct place
  • Collecting fines
  • Tendering sales
  • Signing community borrowers up for library cards
  • Troubleshooting printing issues
  • Tracking library statistics
  • Opening and closing the library
  • Other tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as a student at University of Nevada, Reno
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook and Word
  • Familiar with operating different office equipment (for instance: printers, scanners, or multi-line phones)
  • Self-starter
  • Punctual
  • Detail-oriented
  • Organized
  • Communicates effectively by phone, email, and in person

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has prior experience working with the public in a customer service capacity
  • Has prior experience working with either inventory management or customer account management software
  • Has prior experience using a Point of Sale (POS) system
  • Available to work weekends, evenings, and breaks

Schedule

Expected hours to work per week: 10 - 15 hours a week during the semester, up to 40 hours per week during school breaks. Library hours of operation vary by semester
