Title:
Paraprofessional
Position Summary:
Paraprofessionals in the Hamden Public School District assist teachers and/or other professional educators in the delivery of instructional and related services to students, and/or provide operational supports to schools. The paraprofessional works under the direction of a certified teacher and/or other certified professional, inclusive of school and district-level administrators.
Qualifications:
  1. Must hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  2. Must hold a Bachelors's Degree, Associates' Degree or achieve a passing score on the ParaPro test from the State of Connecticut
  3. Must demonstrate knowledge of computers, copiers, and related technology to support student learning (i.e. Microsoft Office products when necessary)
  4. Must have effective communication skills
  5. Ability to work effectively with a diverse student populations
  6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Reports To:
Certified Educator, including school and district-level administrators
Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Works with individual students, small groups of students, or the entire class to support student comprehension of concepts introduced by certified staff
  2. Works in collaboration with certified staff to implement academic and/or non-academic learning activities
  3. Records grades, monitors, collects, and corrects students work, including objective-type tests and quizzes
  4. Provides instructional supports and guidance for well-established school routines for all substitute teachers that may be placed in the classroom
  5. Assists with the supervision of students in a variety of school settings (i.e. lunch periods, play periods, assemblies, hallways, recess, bus loading areas and field trips) and during other school-sponsored activities transpiring during normal school hours
  6. Attends all professional development sessions (as directed by school and/or district-level administrators) for the purpose of acquiring knowledge and skills that are pertinent to their job performance
  7. Supports the implementation of student behavioral plans
  8. Distributes, organizes and collects instructional materials
  9. Communicates with supervising instructional and administrative staff for the purpose of assisting in evaluating students' progress and/or implementing IEP objectives
  10. Keeps bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up-to-date
  11. Operates equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes
  12. Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students for the purpose of maintaining students' personal hygiene, inclusive of toileting, diapering, and lifting when required
  13. Provides classroom coverage for teachers attending PPTs, 504 meetings, teacher evaluation conferences, SRBI meetings, other meetings, and professional development opportunities
  14. Makes copies of instructional or informational materials for classroom teachers
  15. Coordinates lunch counts with the food service provider
  16. Provides secretarial coverage in the school's main office (i.e. assists with answering telephones, providing information and assistance to callers, making copies, and processing tardy students)
  17. Assists in distributing incoming mail appropriately
  18. Collaborates with appropriate school personnel to organize Kindergarten Orientations
  19. Maintains confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others
  20. Assists the Media Specialist(s) with maintenance of the library circulation system
  21. Re-shelves library books
  22. Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the classroom teacher and/or school or district-level administrator

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the classroom teacher to whom the paraprofessional reports, or the appropriate school or district-level administrator
