While they often share similar environments and purposes, Student Government typically has broader responsibilities, including representing student interests at higher levels, organizing major events, and liaising with school administration. Student Council usually focuses on organizing student activities and fostering student engagement. Both roles develop leadership skills and involve participation in school governance, but Student Government often has a more formal structure and wider scope.

Specific responsibilities and levels of involvement may vary throughout the term of office.
ASI Maritime Academy Councilย (AMAC)The AMAC is a recommending body established under the ASI Board of Directors to represent, serve, and address the needs of students at Cal Poly Solano. AMAC members support student advocacy efforts across the Cal Poly Maritime Academy campus, provide recommendations to the ASI Board of Directors, and help advance student-focused initiatives, programs, and outreach.ย

Requirements
Members of the ASI Maritime Academy Council are considered mandated reportersย under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act andย areย requiredย toย comply withย the requirementsย set forth inย ASI Policy as a condition of their volunteer assignment.ย
It is a conflict of interest for ASI to employ members of ASI Student Government and require those individuals to have the responsibility of governing and making decisionsย regardingย the organization by which they are employed. Because of this conflict, it is necessary to separateย the rolesย by not allowing a student to simultaneously hold a position inย ASIย Student Government and be employed by ASI.ย
The ordinary term of office for ASI Student Government members shall be one year,ย commencingย on the day after the close of spring term and ending on the last day of the following spring term.
General Responsibilities of AMAC Membersย- Represent and advocate for the needs, interests, and perspectives of Cal Poly Maritime Academy students.ย
- Communicate regularly with students to gather feedback and identify emerging issues.ย
- Collaborate with ASI, campus partners, and community stakeholders to support student-centered initiatives.ย
- Support and participate in ASI and AMAC events, outreach, and engagement efforts.ย
- Contribute to community-building efforts on and off the Solano campus.ย
- Attend and actively participate in all AMAC meetings and trainings.ย
- Participate in assessment, planning, and goal-setting efforts for AMAC and ASI.ย
- Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair of the AMAC.ย
- Serve on ASI internal Standing and ad hoc committees as recommended by the Chair of the AMAC and appointed by the Chair of the ASI Board of Directors.ย
- Serve on university wide and/or Academic Senate committees as appointed by the ASI President.ย
- Weekly AMAC meetingsย
- Meetings with the AMAC Chair as neededย
- Standing and ad hoc committee meetings as appointedย
- ASI workshops and training sessionsย
- AMAC and ASI outreach or engagement activities throughout the termย
Benefits
Professional development/mentoring to the AMAC will be provided by the ASI Executive Director or designee. As a mentor, the ASI Executive Director or designee will provide constructive feedback and guidance on a regular basis to assist the AMAC members in their personal and professional development.ย
The AMAC receives priority registration and ASI vehicle privileges, if eligible.ย
Please note, despite the language below prompting you to apply for this job, this is a volunteer position.
